Video: Why Does The Puppy Get Dirty In The House?
It is very unpleasant when your puppy regularly leaves puddles in the hallway or on the carpets in the room, or even worse, when he is afraid or as a sign of resignation. This problem is quite common, but there is a way out of it. Most dogs grow out of this problem. Much also depends on the owner, who must remember that time, patience, good odor control and appropriate upbringing are the key points here.
Step one: Make sure the problem is not a medical problem. Whenever you are dealing with a problem urinating or defecating in the wrong place, the first thing you should do is to make sure it is not caused by a medical condition, such as a urinary tract infection or birth defects, which often lead to "Submissive" urination.
To make such a diagnosis, a complete medical examination is necessary, including the delivery of tests and, possibly, even an X-ray using a contrast agent.
Your veterinarian will probably ask you how you detect urine. If urine drips or pours in your presence, it could mean that the dog is exhibiting submissive behavior. However, if you return home and find a puddle there, or your pet is urinating unconsciously, there may be another cause of the problem. Your veterinarian will test for conditions such as incontinence, poor sphincter control, bladder stones, cognitive dysfunction, etc.
Step two. Distinguish submissive urination from other behavior problems. In addition to physical causes, there are several behavioral problems that may sound like submissive urination, but are actually very different in treatment and cause. For example, some puppies are unable to control their bladder, which can cause urine to leak when they are too agitated or scared. In this case, timing is the best medicine: dogs do not have complete control over their bladder until three to four months of age, and once they have reached that age, puddles are likely to appear less frequently.
Another behavior that can be confused with submissive urination is fear-related urination. When a pet is afraid, a reflexive contraction of the intestines and bladder occurs. A frightened pet may lie on its back, turning its head and tucking its tail, and urinate while doing so. A severely frightened animal may even bite its owner. Dogs that exhibit this behavior in times of fear should be treated with extreme caution and care.
In contrast, the body language of a dog prone to submissive urination is much more “joyous”. These dogs seek to please their master by wagging their tail, licking his hands. Submissive urination occurs because the pet confirms your dominance in the hierarchy. It can appear, for example, if you want to pet a dog or put it on a leash, which are considered signs of dominance in the dog world.
Other dogs sit down and urinate with a sharp, loud bark.
Another way to distinguish this behavior from other types of urination in the wrong places is to analyze the very places where the "crime" occurs. When submissively urinating, the dog will urinate only in the presence of other dominant animals or people. Some breeds have a predisposition for this behavior. These are Cocker Spaniels, Dalmatians and Golden Retrievers.
Step three. Consideration of the problem. Treating submissive urination requires patience and gentleness. Most puppies outgrow this problem as they begin to mature and gain more self-confidence. Your task is to help the dog overcome this problem. The best way is to give your dog tasks and reward him for his success. Use basic obedience commands consistently.
You will also want to prevent these incidents as much as possible. To do this, you should analyze the events and situations that result in urination in the wrong place, and avoid any dominant actions on your part.
Some dogs are so sensitive that even when they greet another dog, they will urinate. In this case, rule number one: ignore your dog. The best treatment for a dog with submissive urination is not to respond to submissive behavior.
What to do if suddenly the puppy is guilty again? Patience and gentleness are very important here, you should not shout and punish the dog, otherwise it will only get worse. In some difficult cases of submissive urination, medication is necessary. Your veterinarian may prescribe special treatments to improve sphincter tone, or prescribe antidepressants. It should be remembered that no treatment will be effective if behavioral therapy is not followed along with it.
