If you are going to keep tropical fish, you will also need water heaters. The heaters provide a constant temperature in the aquarium, they also stabilize the temperature at night when the temperature in the room drops and the aquarium cools down. For most tropical fish, the ideal water temperature for life is around 25 ° C.
There are two main types of heating elements. Underwater, they are completely submerged in water, remaining below the surface of the water. Above-water - these are immersed in water only partially, that is, a heating element, which is basically a glass tube with coils, is lowered into the water, and the rest is above the surface. Underwater systems are much more convenient as they can be placed horizontally on the wall of the aquarium. This helps to maintain the temperature of the aquarium and prevents the heater from operating outdoors during water changes, meaning it remains submerged.
Types of aquarium water heaters
When using surface systems, it is very important to remember to turn off the heater during water changes. Since while you drain the old water, the water level will drop, the glass tube with heating elements will be in the open air, it will heat up and may simply burst.
If the constant temperature in the aquarium room differs from the desired water temperature in the tank in the range of 2-4 ° C, then a 2.5 watt heater for 3 liters of water is fine. If the temperature difference is higher, then a device with a power of 5 watts or more may be needed. Remember that the heater should keep the temperature in the aquarium constant, even when the room is cold, the water temperature should not fluctuate much.

Heaters (especially cheap ones) tend to break down over time. The most common problem is that either the heater stops turning off and works all the time, or it does not work at all. In the first case, it can get TOO hot in your aquarium and you will practically cook your fish, especially if the heater power is higher than your aquarium needs. To avoid such problems, never buy a larger aquarium heater than you need.
To protect yourself from problems in winter, you can use two weak heaters in parallel, instead of putting one, but powerful. Even if one breaks, the consequences will not be so dire.

Among other equipment (stand, heater, filter, etc.) you need to buy a cover for your aquarium. The lid will keep fish from jumping out of the aquarium and regulate water evaporation.
