You have probably seen in pet stores, in offices and other places - funny little tabletop aquariums with a volume of 3-4 liters. Some mini aquariums are spherical, others are cylindrical, and most are hexagonal. The idea of having such an aquarium on your desktop or in your home office usually doesn't seem like a big deal.

Mini-aquariums are most often sold in a set: an aquarium, a lid, lights, an air pump, a filter (almost all accessories). This is their appeal: they are compact, good-looking, cheap and ready to install without much effort. Just pour in water and start the fish.

However, the operating instructions for such aquariums do not say that there is much more work with them than it seems

You probably already have a mini aquarium like this. In this case, we will try to explain how to care for him in the best way. If you do not have such an aquarium, you can give you advice before you buy it: don't do it! Do not buy. There are more problems with him than it seems, and if you do not devote enough time to properly caring for the fish, you will simply kill it.

There are always many problems with mini aquariums. For example, a filter: it is not powerful enough to purify water well. The bottom soil filter (which comes with all mini aquariums) is the best type of filter, but not suitable for mini aquariums.

Bottom sediment filters use bacteria to decompose waste (partly ammonia - the main component of fish urine, as well as decomposition by-products of eaten food) into harmless substances.

As the oxygen-rich water passes through the gravel, bacteria multiply and transform waste. Problem: The mini aquarium is so small that there is not enough water to form ammonia. It takes time for bacteria to build up in the filter. it takes a couple of weeks - better than 6.

The larger tank has more space between the fish and the ammonia build-up, simply because there is more water there. And also mini tanks are very easy to overpopulate, which will negatively affect the entire state of the aquarium.

It is almost impossible to regulate the temperature of mini aquariums. Let's start with the fact that not every heater is designed for a small volume of water. On the other hand, a mini tank is extremely susceptible to sudden changes in temperature.

There is also a problem with lighting. In a small aquarium, the lamp causes the water to heat up by several degrees, and when it is turned off, the temperature drops just as quickly.

Most tropical fish prefer temperatures between 24.5-28 ° C. Goldfish prefer 18-23 ° C (BUT, remember that normally one adult goldfish needs an aquarium of 30 liters or more! That is, in a mini-aquarium, scrofula will delight you for a short time, since most likely they will quickly die living in such conditions). It is almost impossible to maintain tropical temperatures in a mini aquarium unless it is already in a very warm place. Goldfish feels good in cool water only at a constant temperature. If the aquarium is in the office and the water temperature drops after the staff leaves, nothing good will come of it.

If you have a mini tank, place it where the temperature will be constant. A temperature fluctuation of 2 degrees will be very negative.

When setting up a mini aquarium, be prepared to change the water frequently until the bacteria have taken over the filter. You should always have water on hand, at least 48 hours apart. We recommend using a cleaner that will easily remove dirt. And also carry out a 25% water change 2 times a week (minimum). Small guppies and macropods are the best inhabitants of mini aquariums. We recommend stocking fish depending on the volume - for 1 guppy, a volume of 4 liters or more is required. If you are a tropical fish lover and can maintain a stable temperature in your aquarium, a fighting fish (cockerel) is ideal for a mini aquarium.

You can start 2 tropical fish per 3.5 liters, but you can try planting a small catfish, one or two small scalar (normally a pair of adult scalar needs an aquarium of 100 liters!) Or a dwarf gourami. Or a maximum of 5-6 small neons or glowing tetras (firefly tetras). Or run a couple of small blue or gold gourami or one macro pod along with small catfish for an interesting picture.

Do not add algae eaters unless your aquarium is located near a strong light source such as a window. If there is a problem with algae in your mini aquarium, you light the aquarium too much and set the temperature in it incorrectly.

Remember, if you take proper care of your fish, after a few months they will outgrow their cramped home and you need to replace them with fry. But only if you take proper care of her.

Do you think there is a lot of work? You are right, it is. Therefore, we do not recommend mini aquariums. However, they are easy to assemble and lighter than larger aquariums, but require more careful maintenance.

It is not advisable to buy an aquarium with a volume of less than 35 liters. They are undoubtedly larger and more difficult to assemble and carry, but heaters are commercially available for these aquariums. And, even if you don't use a heater, temperature fluctuations occur smoothly in them, which is why such aquariums are great for keeping one goldfish. Mini aquariums are not easy to light without allowing for sudden temperature changes. Water in 35L aquariums is harder to spoil with ammonia. It is easier to keep more fish in this aquarium than in a small one.

All these tips will make it easier for you to maintain your aquarium for a long time. After all, the purpose of buying aquarium fish is to have fun, right? It is much more pleasant to watch them when they are healthy and you have no problem caring for them. Is not it?

Finally, if you have a mini aquarium, there is one more important thing to consider: nutrition. Make sure the food is completely consumed within 3-5 minutes. And make sure each catfish is fed and not starving. Feed your fish a 3: 1 protein to fat formula to improve digestion and reduce waste. Also give vitamins and minerals. Feed twice a day.
