Chocolate Gourami, or Chocolate Gourami, is a popular labyrinth fish native to Southeast Asia. Peaceful and slightly shy fish, which, in case of danger, prefers to hide in dense thickets of vegetation. Great for keeping in a shared aquarium with any calm neighbors of similar size. Can only be recommended for experienced aquarists. Loves clean water and dim light.

Habitat: Southeast Asia, widespread throughout Hindustan and the Maklaka Peninsula.

Habitat: ponds and ditches protected by vegetation hanging from the banks into the water, as well as in slowly flowing streams overgrown with plants. They are found in different bodies of water - from crystal clear to impenetrable with brown water.

Description: the body is moderately elongated in length, slightly high, flattened laterally, the profile of the belly is more curved than the profile of the back. The eyes are large, the mouth is small and slightly elongated upward. The dorsal fin and anal fin are long, low, the pelvic fins with a filiform elongated first ray. Like all members of the chocolate gourami family, they breathe atmospheric air using a gill labyrinth.

Color: the main background of the body is dark brown (chocolate), 5-6 uneven transverse stripes of different widths and lengths run along the head and sides. Stripes can be whitish, cream or white with a pink tint. The pelvic fins are red, along the edge of the unpaired fins there is a narrow red edging. Scales with a dark border. It should be remembered that the color directly depends on the food - if it is monotonous, then the fish turn pale.

Size: up to 6 cm.

Aquarium: specific, closed with a lid on top.

Sizes: from 70 liters per pair.

Water: dH no more than 10 °, pH 5-6, salt content in water (nitrogen, phosphoric) is as low as possible; filtration with peat filler, aeration; water level up to 20 cm; weekly changes up to 20-30% of the water volume; the course is weak or absent. Tree leaves are placed on the bottom of the aquarium (they are pre-dried and then soaked until they start to sink), which are changed every 1-2 weeks. Chocolate gourami are sensitive to changes in conditions, to organics, but if conditions change very, very slowly, they can perfectly withstand cooling up to 22 ° C.

Temperature: 26-30 ° C.

Lighting: diffused.

Priming:any soft substrate.

Plants: shade-loving plants are planted around the perimeter of the aquarium, floating plants are planted on the surface of the water.

Decoration: a variety of driftwood and shelters, thickets of plants, free space for swimming is required.

Feeding: they take mainly live food (cyclops, bloodworms, daphnia, insects and their larvae). Chocolate gourami swallow food from the surface of the water. Fish are prone to overeating! Some fish willingly feast on snails (coils, melania).

Behavior: peaceful and slightly shy fish, which in case of danger prefers to hide in dense thickets. They are most active in the daytime. Allowed content both alone and in a large group.

Temperament: during the mating season, small skirmishes between males are possible, which never lead to injury.

Water zone: middle and bottom water layers.

May be kept with: calm species of fish, large and small, withstand the same water parameters (eg small rasbor).

May not be kept with: active schooling and large fish.

Breeding fish: difficult in aquarium conditions. Paired spawning. Before the fish are planted for spawning, they are kept separately for 7 days and fed abundantly. Spawning plant from 50 liters (without soil). Part of the water surface should be covered with small-leaved floating plants (Riccia, Indian water fern), and the sight glass should be closed. Water parameters: dH up to 3 °, pH 5-6, T 28-30 ° C, water level up to 15 cm. Chocolate gourami lay eggs on the bottom. The female incubates eggs in her mouth, keeping to the surface under the protection of floating plants.

Sexual differences: in the male, the dorsal fin is pointed at the end, in the female it is rounded. Before spawning, the male becomes almost black, the female's throat turns reddish.

Puberty: begins at 6-8 months.

Number of eggs: a female usually has no more than 40 eggs in her mouth. The caviar is large enough (1.2-1.5 mm in diameter), yellowish.

Incubation period: fry emerge at 13-14 days.

Offspring: fry 5-6 mm long, dark and well visible. They are susceptible to colds (therefore, the temperature in the nursery aquarium is maintained at about 30 ° C) and parasitic diseases. The water level in the aquarium with fry is lowered to 5-10 cm and does not change until a labyrinth forms and they begin to gasp for air at the surface. The fry keep and feed among the plants near the surface.

Feeding juveniles:starter food - nauplii of brine shrimp, which are given often, but little by little.

Jigging from parents: the male is removed after spawning.

Comments: Chocolate gourami is quite delicate fish, susceptible to bacterial infections and skin parasites. Water parameters play an important role.
