Gourami pearl (Pearl Gourami) is found in India and Indo-China and does not exceed 8-10 cm in length under aquarium conditions.

Pearl gourami is of exceptional interest in color. The background of the body is silvery, with a faint purple tint. The fish is covered with a mass of regularly spaced white specks or spots that resemble scattered pearls, this is very effective. The two gill fins, the dorsal and the caudal, give the impression of tulle and have the same pearly luster as the body.

During spawning, these fish are even more elegant. The purple color becomes denser, which makes the pearl dots acquire a bright shine - "burn". In the male, the lower part of the gill covers, the entire chest and anal fin to the tail become bright orange. This fish is very shy and more sensitive to temperature changes and water pollution than blue and spotted gourami. She gets along well with many types of aquarium fish. After abundant feeding, pearl gourami swim and stand in the upper layer of water, trying not to bother themselves with frequent ones. ascents from a depth for atmospheric air. They do not like a brightly lit aquarium, they try to hide in thickets of plants. The food is taken floating, from the bottom and at the surface of the water.

The female differs from the male, as in all gourami species, in that the dorsal fin is shorter and its tip is round. In the male, the dorsal fin is sharp, its length reaching the tail. In addition, the male is always brighter in color.

You can keep pearl gourami in an aquarium of at least 100 liters, densely planted with plants, in clean water with low light, at a temperature of 21-23 ° C. The most favorable depth of the aquarium is 30-35 cm. Artificial enrichment of water with oxygen is not required. It is better to feed live, frozen and dry food.

Pearl gourami, like all labyrinth fish, spawn at temperatures above 20 ° C.

For spawning, the aquarium should be placed in a place where no one walks past it, or closed from the outside. Two or three dense bushes of plants should be planted in the aquarium, where the female could hide from the male during the maturation of her reproductive products.

Usually, the male prepares a nest on the surface of the water from air bubbles in the form of foam, but sometimes pearl gourami spawn without a nest. In the latter case, the eggs spread over the surface of the water and fry are also successfully removed from it.

It is easier to get offspring from a young, newly matured couple. If the development of the fish is not prolonged, then this corresponds to the age from 8 months to a year, in some couples - to the age of 14 months. It is not possible to get offspring older than this age.

Breeders who started breeding at the age of eight months or more than a year are able to spawn 4-5 times with the number of 50 to 200 eggs in each litter, with intervals between litters of 10-12 days, after which the fish stop breeding.

The fry emerge from the eggs in 24-26 hours, very small and weak, with a yolk bladder, due to which they live up to three days. At three days of age, they need to start feeding with ciliates and continue to give this food for 5-6 days. In the future, you can feed "live dust" sifted through a clean net. In the absence of live dust, you can feed with yogurt. Sour milk, after having washed it from whey in clean water, must be passed through a frequent net in small portions so that the fry can pick it up. This feed should be given every 2-3 hours. As the fry grow, the portions of feed should be increased by pushing it through a sparser net. This food is also eaten by fry and adults of some other fish species. In addition, the food is good because it does not spoil the water and does not sink for a long time.

Moscow lover E. E. Tizengauzen managed to cross the pearl gourami (male) with the blue gourami (female). The hybrids have a bluish body background covered with white spots without a pearly sheen. The anal fin is covered with bright orange specks, the caudal fin is covered with white.
