For infectious diseases of fish include diseases caused by micro-organisms, bacteria, spirochetes, rickettsia, actinomycetes, viruses, fungi and algae. The causative agents of infections are pathogenic microbes that have the property of parasitizing and multiplying in the body of animals.

The disease can be caused by one or two pathogens simultaneously. The course of all infectious diseases is similar. First, there is a latent period from the beginning of the introduction and reproduction of the pathogen in the animal's body, then external signs of the disease appear. The duration of the latent period depends on the number and place of introduction of microbes, the state of the animal's body. Sick animals and carriers of microbes that contaminate the environment can be sources of disease. As a result, water, equipment, soil and plants become infected.

Mycobacteriosis (tuberculosis) of fish. The causative agent is a gram-positive acid-resistant bacillus ranging in size from 2 to 12 microns. The most susceptible to mycobacteriosis are labyrinth, haracin, and karp-toothed fish at any age.

Fish with tuberculosis

Symptoms: the fish become lethargic, closely huddled in the upper corner of the aquarium, the tails are lowered, the coordination of movements is impaired. Sometimes there is dropsy of the abdomen, bulging, loss of scales, destruction of fins. On autopsy, brown and white curdled nodules are clearly visible in almost all organs. Sick fish are destroyed, the soil is replaced, the aquarium is disinfected with a 3% solution of chloramine or bleach. The inventory is boiled for 30 minutes.

Peptic ulcer disease in fish. The causative agents are aquatic microbes Pseudomonas fluorescens, which are common in natural water bodies.

Symptoms: small dark spots on the body of the fish, turning into reddish round ulcers. With the further course of the disease, pathogenic fungi of the genera Saprolegnia and Achlya settle at the site of the ulcers, complicating the course of the underlying disease.

Treatment: apply bicillin-5, biomycin, white streptocid, potassium permanganate with basic purple potassium, provided there is a slight lesion of the skin.

Lepidortosis, or infectious scaling. The bacteria Aeromonas punctata and the fluorescent pseudomonad (Pseudomonas fluorescens) are considered the causative agents. Almost all aquarium fish of different ages are susceptible to disease.

Irrigation of scales in fish (lepidorthosis)

Symptoms: at first, scales rise in some parts of the fish body, with the further course of the disease, the scales rise throughout the body due to the spread of subcutaneous purulent vesicles

Treatment: the disease is curable only in the initial period with the help of bicillin-5, biomycin and white streptocide.

The aquarium and equipment are disinfected with a 5% solution of hydrochloric (HCL) or sulfuric (H 2 SO 4) acids (you can use chloramine).

Fin rot. The causative agent of bacteria from the Pseudomonas group. Almost all aquarium fish of different ages are susceptible to disease.

Symptoms: In young fish, the disease begins with the decay of the pectoral and caudal fins. Initially, bluish-white opacities of the edges of the fins appear, then the decay areas increase, the ends of the rays disappear. In fry, the tail fins disappear completely. The last stage of the disease is characterized by the formation of white ulcers on the basis of the destroyed fins. The fins of the cured fish are restored.

Treatment: raise the temperature of the water to the possible limit and add bicillin-5 or biomycin to the aquarium. The duration of treatment is 1.5-2 months. Can be treated with white streptocide, the duration of treatment is 2-3 months.

Lymphocystosis. The causative agent is a filtering virus, under the influence of which giant lymphocyst cells up to 1.5 mm in size are formed. Freshwater and marine fish of all ages are susceptible to disease.

Symptoms: Black nodules and flat growths appear on the fins and body of the fish. No treatment has been developed. Sick fish are destroyed. You can try to preserve valuable fish by burning the affected areas with a hot wire.

The aquarium is disinfected with 3% chloramine, the equipment is boiled for 30 minutes.

Ichthyosporidiosis (ichthyophonosis). The causative agent is a fungus from the phycomycete group up to 200 microns in size. Affects aquarium fish of all ages.

Ichthyosporidiosis of fish

Symptoms: impaired coordination of movements, fish swim in leaps and bounds with the whole body, lie on the bottom on their side, cramps and trembling of fins are observed; wounds, ulcers, bumps are formed; fins are destroyed; ruffle of scales and dropsy of the body (with kidney damage).

When a severely affected fish is dissected, numerous yellowish and brown nodules the size of a millet grain are clearly visible on the internal organs.

Treatment has not been developed. Sick fish are destroyed, suspicious ones are quarantined for 30 days. The aquarium is disinfected with 3% chloramine solution, 5% hydrochloric or sulfuric acid solution. The inventory is boiled for 30 minutes.
