Callicht, or tiled callicht, or armored catfish (Armored catfish, Cascarudo, Hassar) is a popular aquarium catfish that grows up to 15 cm. It is a peaceful and relatively undemanding species. Like all catfish, he does not like bright lighting. Great for public aquariums. Prefers standing, clean water. Food is given in the dark. Since the species is gregarious, it is recommended to buy at least 5 tails at once. Breeding in aquariums is considered moderately difficult. Strongly stirring up the soil.

Etymology: the generic name - Callichthys - derived from the words - "callum" - (Latin - "tough, thick skin") and "ikhthýs" (other Greek - "fish").

Habitat: northern and eastern parts of South America - Brazil, Venezuela, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Bolivia (basins of the Amazon, Paraguay).

Habitat: small stagnant and slowly flowing reservoirs (oxygen deficiency often occurs in the bottom layers of these reservoirs) with a silty bottom.

Description: short, relatively tall body. There is a powerful thorn in front of the adipose fin. There are two fins on the back. The eyes are mobile, small. Two pairs of mustaches. The body is covered with bony plates in two rows (26-29 plates in the upper row and 25-28 in the lower one). The caudal fin is rounded. The back contour is curved. In addition to gill respiration, callicht have intestinal respiration, which helps them breathe oxygen.

Color:olive brown with numerous dark spots. The abdomen is small-white, with irregular dark spots on the gray fins.

Size: in nature, callicht grows - up to 20 cm, in an aquarium - up to 14 cm.

Life expectancy: up to 15 years.

Aquarium: general or specific, oblong.

Sizes: from 100-150 liters, with a large bottom area. One adult catfish needs at least 60 liters of water.

Water: dH up to 25 °, pH 6-8, filtration, weekly changes up to 20-30% water. Kallicht does not tolerate the presence of salt in water. Prefers standing, clean water. Like other catfish, it prefers a low water level (30-40 cm).

Temperature: 18-24 ° C.

Lighting: diffused, semi-darkness.

Substrate: sand or small pebbles of dark tones, without sharp edges.

Plants: thickets of strong, well-rooted plants with large leaves, several bushes floating on the surface of the water.

Registration: driftwood, grottoes, shelters, PVC pipes, shards and other shelters.

Feeding: In the wild, callicht feeds on fish, insects and a variety of plant material. Juveniles feed on rotifers and larvae of aquatic insects, which they find in the substrate. In aquariums, he takes live (small earthworms, tubifex, bloodworms, daphnia, coretra) and bottom tablets for catfish. It eats algae plaque with pleasure. Food is given in the dark. Adult fish are fed 1-2 times a day.

Character: mobile, gregarious, nocturnal. It is recommended to keep at least 5 fish.

Temperament: Sexually mature males become territorial and can injure each other (especially in cramped aquariums). Sometimes, such fights can be fatal.

Water zone: bottom layer of water.

Can be kept with: peaceful fish (cichlazomas, anostomuses, brown pacu, metinnis, leporins).

Not to be kept with: small (up to 4 cm) or aggressive fish.

Breeding fish:considered moderately difficult in aquariums. In the wild, the breeding season falls on the "rainy season", so every day they make a "rain" from a watering can in the aquarium, and feed the producers intensively. Spawning is portioned, paired or nesting (1 female and 2 males), both in general and in a spawning aquarium (without soil, with a dark substrate). Several bushes of large-leaved plants are planted in the spawning ground. Spawning aquarium with a volume of 80-100 liters and a length of 80 cm for a couple, water level 30 cm, good filtration, aeration, frequent water changes. The aquarium is shaded on three sides. Water parameters: pH 6.5-7, dH 5-8 °, T 22-25 ° C, distilled or rainwater. The male builds a foam nest with a diameter of 8-15 cm under floating leaves of plants (philodendron) or under a piece of floating foam placed in a bright corner of the aquarium. The male actively protects the nest from other fish and makes grunting sounds.

Sex differences: the male differs from the female in bright orange thickenings on the pectoral fins and a notch on the back of the tail. In males, the first rays of the pectoral fins are spine-shaped, while in females they are less developed. During breeding, the male's belly turns orange and his pectoral spines become longer and thicker.

Puberty: about 1.5 years (at a length of 10 cm).

Number of eggs: up to 300 eggs with a diameter of about 2 mm.

Egg incubation period: about 5 days at 26 ° C.

Offspring: fry swim for 6-8 days. Aquarium for fry from 20 liters, water temperature should not exceed 20 ° C. Active aeration, presence of darkened corners, ceramic flower pot or pipe, daily replacement of up to 50% of the volume of water, or adding trypaflavin to the water (until the water is yellow-green). Siphon the soil every day. Up to one month of age, juveniles breathe only oxygen dissolved in water, therefore, with a lack of oxygen and in “dirty” water, the fry die.

Feeding juveniles: starter food - "live dust", nauplii of Artemia and Cyclops, ciliates, then - small Cyclops. At the age of 8-10 days, larger feed is given.

Jumping from parents:after spawning, the female is removed; the male is deposited after the fry begin to blur from the nest.

Comments: Kallicht stirs up the soil strongly. Once out of the water, it begins to crawl with the help of the pectoral fins (it can crawl up to 90 cm in 2 hours).

Large catfish should be handled with care: their fins are prickly and wounds from them do not heal well.
