Video: Heteranthera Zosterifolia
The Holly Heterantera is common in the slow-flowing and stagnant waters of tropical Brazil. It is a very delicate long-stemmed plant with light green narrow leaves. The stems can reach a length of 40-50 cm. A relatively undemanding plant that grows evenly throughout the year. The geterantera is considered the ideal plant for Dutch aquariums.
The plant has thin, white roots. The root system is poorly developed. It grows well when floating. Prefers clay soil. The composition of the water does not really matter, but the water temperature should not be lower than 22-26 ° С. In colder water, growth slows down noticeably. The water should be soft, slightly acidic.
The illumination of the aquarium is medium or strong. With a lack of light, the geterantera is strongly stretched, and the leaves of the plant quickly become smaller. Lighting can be both natural and artificial. It grows quickly in strong light and needs frequent pruning to keep the lower leaves lit. Small blue flowers bloom on the shoots floating on the surface of the water.
This plant is an excellent indicator of water quality. with a lack of nitrogen (in the form of NO3), the leaves become transparent before they wither. when there is a lack of phosphorus (in the form of PO4), the plant changes its bright green color to a darker shade.
The plant thrives better at low water levels. The Holly Heterantera should be planted in small bushes in the foreground or middle ground. Propagated by stem and root cuttings (the apical shoot or the middle part of the stem with a well-defined lateral shoot is taken). Leaves up to 7 cm long and 0.5 cm wide are usually pale green or green in color. In hard water, old leaves die quickly. Regular water changes are not required. The nature of the soil is not essential, special mineral fertilizing is not required.
In addition to this species, other types of heterantera are common in aquariums, the conditions of their maintenance do not differ from those described. Therefore, we will only list them and indicate the external signs of difference.
Geterantera kallolistnaya (Heteranthera callifolia) with a blunt tapered leaves.
Heteranthera is reniform (Heteranthera regiformis), with denser cordate leaves.
