Jikin (jikin, peacock tail, Japanese 地 金, ingot) is an original and very rare mutation from wakin even for Japan, which appeared in 1610 and still produces no more than 40% of its kind. Jikin is a symbol of the Nagoya region in Japan. In 1958, the breed was registered as a protected species in Aichi Prefecture.

Adult fish

Jikin has the same body shape as Ryukin. The originality of this breed is not only in the X-shaped tail, but also in the color called "Rokurin". This name means that six parts of the fish's body, lips and tail are red, the rest are white. The exact description of obtaining this color is still kept secret.

Young individual

It is only known that fish with a butterfly-shaped tail are caught and at a certain age they clean off colored scales, which soon grows, but already colorless, and the red color remains only on the fins, lips and gills. There is a mother-of-pearl form called "edojikin" (pearl instead of white scales). China has its own kind of jikin, but it is not called Jikin, but Jinkin (an extra letter "n" in the name). This morph meets the same standards as the Japanese Jikin, but the color requirements are lower.

According to the current breed standard, the jikin's body depth should be approximately 40% of its body length. Caudal fin should be split and bifurcated with rounded, divided into 4 parts, of which 2 upper ones are raised. All blades must be the same size. The dorsal fin is single, all other fins are paired, and their ends are slightly rounded. At least 50% of the body must be white. The minimum body length is 7.5 cm.

Jikin was originally intended to be kept in ponds or small spacious ponds so that you can admire the fish from above, and not from the side (as in aquariums). These fish are very demanding on the purity of the water, therefore, they are completely unsuitable for keeping with koi carps. The breed is rare and expensive. The price for young dzikin starts from 300 €, and for adult fish you will have to pay from 1500 to 10000 €!
