Oranda (Hon Mao Tsu, Tsuimaotsu - Chinese, Japanese 和 蘭 獅子頭 - Oranda Sishi-gasira, Oranda lionhead) is one of the breeds of the aquarium "goldfish", which is one of the varieties of the veil-tail, but differs in growths on the gill covers and head. Bred in China. In Russia, the oranda was called a veil tail with a hat, less often - a goldfish in a turban. The second most popular breed of goldfish after the Ryukin.

Oranda is one of the most variegated forms of goldfish with a body length of 18-26 cm. Oranda-shishi-gasira is a mixture of the best qualities of a ryukin and a ranch head. The lion-like head, thanks to its numerous fleshy growths, vaguely resembles the maned king of animals. But it can be called so only when the growths cover the entire head with gills. If the growths are only at eye level, then the variation is called "goosehead" or "tiger head". Growths grow especially well in the 2-3rd year of life. They appear not only on fish, but also on the heads of animals and people and are called lion's disease. The body is short, ovoid, with a mass of wart growths covering almost the entire head. The fins are elongated.

Oranda are different in color: bright scarlet, gold, orange, white, brown, black, purple, piebald, variegated, yellow, but regardless of the color of the body, the growth is desirable in a contrasting color. They can be "chintz" - they are completely covered with variegated spots. White and black oranda with red caps are especially effective. The disadvantage is not the bifurcation of the caudal fin, the weakly expanded dorsal fin, asymmetry when viewed from above.

Dr. E. Matsui believes that Oranda is not a hybrid, but a mutation from Ryukin.

This breed has several variations:

Giroshima, or pompom - there are growths on both sides of the mouth in the form of fluffy lumps about 10 mm in size, sometimes one lump on the nose, blue, red or white, similar to pompons (fluffy lumps). If the fish is not properly cared for, the growths will disappear. Length - up to 16 cm. The shape resembles a ranch and a red Dutch lion head. The body is round. The back is low. The dorsal fin is absent; the anal and caudal fin are forked.

Red and white oranda ("sisi-gashira oranda") - the whole body of this fish is covered with large red and white spots, alternating with each other.

Very slow goldfish.

Blue oranda (sisi-gashira oranda) - similar to a dark gray oranda, but blue has a light body with more or less pronounced matte blue and bluish spots concentrated in the back area. Breeding selection and consolidation of the desired qualities continues when new offspring are obtained. The variation is still very rare.

The tail is short, raised and sometimes forked. The dorsal fin is absent. The body is covered with large bright red-yellow-lemon scales, and each scale is also bordered by a red rim. The head color is bright red, similar to the color of a ripe tomato. The tail and fins are also red.

"Little Red Riding Hood" (tancho oranda) has a slightly oblong body, shaped like an egg. This fish has a lion-like, red head, and a white body. The fish looks unusually impressive and attractive. A bright red “cap” covers the head. The dorsal fin is high; the caudal and anal fin are double, long, and free hanging down. It grows in length up to 23 cm.

"Warts of fish", considered by the Japanese to be the top of beauty, very easily disappear if you do not pay special attention to caring for these fish.

Oranda should be kept in a voluminous aquarium, since with a lack of movement the fish have metabolic problems and motor complications - the oranda become inert.

Oranda are unpretentious and omnivorous to food: they eat both live and plant food, as well as dry food.

Sexual maturity of oranda and the possibility of their reproduction occurs one year after hatching of fry from eggs. Preparation for spawning is similar to that described for other breeds of goldfish: the spawning tank settles down in the center of a 100-150 liter aquarium with a spawning grid, one or two sprayers and a bunch of small-leaved plants in the center. For one female 2 males. Fertility is from 2 to 10 thousand eggs. The larva emerges after 2 days. On the 5th day, the fry begin to swim. Feeding fry - rotifer.

The fish are suitable for keeping in cold water aquariums with plenty of free swimming space. Beautiful in greenhouses. Due to the hardiness of the breed, it can be kept in a decorative pond outside. Prefers a community of their own kind, bright light and an abundance of free space. Effective filtration and regular water changes are essential. When designing a reservoir, it is recommended to use loose fine-grained soil, stones, driftwood, live or plastic plants, including floating ones. When decorating, it is necessary to avoid the use of objects with sharp edges and edges, for which the veiled species of fish can injure themselves during swimming and, if caught, break off the fins.
