Barbs are one of the most convenient fish for training a novice aquarist. They are beautiful, small and agile, easy to maintain and inexpensive.
Adult barbs reach a length of 4-6 cm, in nature they keep in flocks, so there should be at least two pairs of fish in the aquarium, and preferably five. With their modest size, 50-100 liters of water are enough for them. The temperature must be maintained at least 20 and not more than 28 ° C, hardness - 18 °, acidity - 6.5-7. Change 20% of the water once a week. The minimum set of equipment is a filter and an aerator: barbs prefer clean water and a weak flow.

Bright bodies of barbs are emphasized by dark ground, it is undesirable to use light ones. For the fish to feel safe, there must be a lot of vegetation at the bottom. They are not aggressive under normal conditions, very rarely attack neighbors, but they can feud inside the pack if it is not large enough. Barbs love to bite the long fins of other fish and eat fry, both their own and others, although they are not predators.

Barbs are omnivorous and very voracious. Obesity is one of their most common diseases, so you cannot overfeed fish. For reliability, it is recommended to give them no more than the required amount of feed, or even a little less. The optimal ratio of the composition of the feed is the following: 15% dry feed, 25% vegetable, 60% live.
Barbus Fasciolatus, or synestrich
With a shortage of plant food, barbs eat up vegetation; lettuce leaves or dried algae should be given them regularly. You need to feed the fish 3-4 times a day, their digestion is excellent and three hours are enough for them to get hungry. When preparing for spawning, it is advisable to add vitamins to the feed.
Barbs can spawn in a common aquarium, and the eggs are immediately eaten. To obtain offspring, a female and two or three males are placed in a spawning grounds, the bottom is covered with a fine mesh, and a little greenery is placed on top. The water is heated to 26-28 ° C and enriched with oxygen to stimulate spawning and development of eggs.

The female lays up to 500 eggs, in a day the larvae appear, which begin to swim on the fifth or sixth day. At this time, they need to be fed with rotifers, nematodes, brine shrimp nauplii and other small food. As the fish grows, you can switch to porridge, egg yolk, bread.

The less often the aquarist interferes with the life of the barbs at this stage, the less risk of damaging them. Mechanical stress, lack of oxygen or a violation of the temperature regime are the reasons for the development of defects in the gills, fins or spine.
