Video: Digging A Pond (body Of Water)
Designing and choosing a pond site is one of the most exciting parts. This part is believed to be the hardest part. Many are trying to deal with this as soon as possible, without thinking that this is one of the most important tasks when arranging their own pond.
Before starting to dig the pit, make sure that you do not touch pipelines and cables that are under high voltage, choose a level place. Many bodies of water can be dug by yourself using a shovel. However, you may also need an excavator.
If you decide to dig yourself, then buy a good narrow shovel, with sharpened edges and a long handle. Wear stiff, high boots. Although this may seem trivial and stupid, it will still affect your work and your well-being in the best possible way. And no one has invented anything better for a son-in-law or brother than digging a foundation pit:).
Try to dig by holding the shovel at a 90 degree angle, that is, straight down. Remove small layers of soil to save your back. Pile them up or take them away in a wheelbarrow - it's up to you.
Remember that there should be several zones with different depths. The shallow zone should be about 10-30 cm deep. In this area, the fish can easily feed on insects, as well as some plants need it. It is also extremely important for an animal or child who has fallen into the pond so that you can get out of there. The deepest part of the pond should be between 60 and 120 cm. This will provide the fish with a refuge during the winter. The depth also depends on winter temperatures. If the fish stays in the pond for the winter, then the depth should be deeper than the freezing line.
Try to work neatly, avoid sharp corners and kinks. Use soft rounding of the pond walls. When finished, use a scoop to smooth the sides and sides of the pond. Remove all stones from the bottom that could damage the future base of the pond. It is also possible to use a 5 cm layer of sand at the bottom of the pond to prevent punctures in the pond linen.
Lining selection. There are many types of pond liners. Plastic rigid ones are convenient, durable and inexpensive, but they do not allow you to arrange a reservoir according to your understanding, but only according to an already given shape. The most common liners are made of synthetic polyethylene. These liners come in a wide variety of thicknesses and allow you to shape the pond the way you want. Polyethylene is one of the most common materials, but over time it tends to harden and become brittle. It is suitable for temporary reservoirs. Butyl rubber and polyvinyl chloride are more expensive, but they will also last much longer - they are good for leveled reservoirs to avoid leaks.
Lining dimensions. Follow the tips to find the right size for your lining.
- Measure the length of the reservoir at the longest point.
- Measure the width of the reservoir at its widest point.
- Measure the depth at the deepest point in the body of water.
- Multiply the maximum depth by two and add the result to the length to get the full length.
- Multiply the maximum depth by two and add the result to the width to get the full width.
Now add another 30-60 cm to each side to provide some extra margin.

For example, if a body of water is 3 m long, 1.5 m wide, and 60 cm deep; we would double the depth to 1.2 m and add that to 3 m, and then add another 60 cm to overlap to get a total length of 4.8 m. To get the width, we would double the depth to 1.2 m and would add that to the width of 1.5 and then add 60cm for overlay to get a width of 3.3m.In the end, we need a 4.8x3.3m pad.
Once the lining is ready we can press it down to the bottom with round stones. Then it is necessary to slowly add water, which will give the lining the necessary shape, along the way slightly adjusting the whole process. Creating your own pond is a lot of work. However, with a little help, everything turns into a real adventure. Remember this and take your time, and also do everything right the first time, since you will no longer be able to fix it.
