The green swordtail, or the red swordtail, or Geller's swordtail, or the simple swordtail (Swordtail, Green swordtail) is one of the most popular fish for novice aquarists. Area: North and Central America (Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Rio de Janeiro, Veracruz).

Habitat: alpine water bodies, river sources, marshes, shallow water bodies with a fast current, ponds and lagoons.

Description: The body is elongated and laterally compressed. The male is slimmer than the female. The mouth is upturned, adapted for eating food from the surface of the water.

Color: natural color - green, fins are greenish-yellow, on the dorsal fin small spots from red to brown. Male sword with black edging, the color of the sword itself is different: from orange-yellow to green or red. The female is colored paler. Body with a silvery sheen. In the middle of the body there is a wide strip, and below and above this strip there are two more narrow strips 0.5 mm wide.

Size: male (without sword) up to 8 cm, female up to 12 cm.

Life expectancy: 3-5 years.

Aquarium: closed with a lid on top, because swordsmen can jump out of it.

Sizes: from 30 cm, from 50 liters. One pair should be at least 6 liters. water.

Water: pH 7.0-8.0, dH 5-20 °, strong aeration, filtration. A 30% water change is performed once a week. Sea or table salt is added to the water: 1 tbsp. 10 liters of water.

Temperature: 20-26 ° C, swordtails can tolerate short-term temperature drops of up to 10 ° C.

Plants: dense thickets, floating plants.

Decoration: various shelters, free swimming space required.

Feeding: various animals (brine shrimp, cyclops, daphnia, bloodworms, tubifex, mosquito larvae) and vegetable (algae, lettuce, spinach and nettle leaves, peas) feed.

If the aquarium contains only swordtails, then all the food that has not been eaten is removed after 5 minutes, since falling to the bottom, it quickly spoils the water.

Behavior: in small flocks, a hierarchy is established between males, so you need to keep either several females and one male, or more than 3 males and 6-9 females. If these proportions are not observed, a strong male will score a weak one.

Character: cheerful and lively fish, peace-loving towards other species.

Water zone: middle and upper water layer.

May be kept with: Peaceful fish of the same size.

Not to be kept with: fish with long fins (eg veiled guppies), large aggressive fish that can eat swordtails.

Breeding fish: swordtails - viviparous fish. Fertilization takes place inside the female and can take about two days, the remaining sperm is stored in the female's body until new eggs mature.

A female ready for childbirth can be identified by a full belly and a black "pregnancy spot".

Sex differences: Males have a xiphoid gonopodium.

Puberty: 6-8 months.

Male to female ratio: 1: 3.

Number of fry: up to 200 pcs. Childbirth takes place in the morning.

Pregnancy: 4-6 weeks. The length of pregnancy depends on water temperature, daylight hours and feeding.

Offspring: Sexual characteristics are formed at 3-4 months, at this time, females and males are seated in separate aquariums. The fry are demanding on the purity of the water, weekly changes of up to 25% of the water are required. Compulsory filtration (from ammonia and nitrites) and aeration.

Growth rate: Grow to adult size within six months.

Feeding juveniles: starter feed - live dust (brine shrimp, cyclops nauplii, rotifers, microworm, cut tubifex). A diet high in protein. Fry is fed frequently.

Ditching from parents: after giving birth, the female is set aside.
