Equestrian sport is extremely popular in the world. These are horse races, show jumping, triathlon, dressage and many other disciplines.
Equestrian sports are especially popular in the UK, which has a long tradition of horse-based sporting events. So, the first mention of racing in Great Britain refers to William Fitzstephen, who wrote about the competitions that took place in Smithfield in London in 1074. And the first treadmill was built in Yorkshire by order of the Roman Caesar Lucius Septimus Cerverus in 208-211.
Until the 16th century, horse racing was the "sport of kings" and "elite fun". So, in Great Britain, horse racing and the development of the English thoroughbred horse breed are traditionally included in the sphere of interests of the upper strata of society. During the reign of James I (1603-1625), official races were organized near Richmond in Yorkshire. In addition, Jacob I introduced a special hunting saddle, which was then used in international equestrian competitions. King Charles I (1625-1649 gg.) Financed the first run , " Gold Cup" at Newmarket in 1634, and since 1667 runs were held there annually.
In 1654, Oliver Cromwell banned running until King Charles II (1660-1685) reinstated the sport. Since that time, the size of the prizes has increased, and therefore the prestige of the races in Newmarket.

She facilitated the import of Arabian horses, including the well-known Darley Arabian, one of the forefathers of the modern English thoroughbred. During her reign, horse races were organized at Ascot (1711), Doncaster and York.
The history of steeplechase - steeplechase racing, which was especially popular in England and Ireland, is interesting. These races were usually held between two churches (from the English steeple - spire and chase - races with obstacles), moreover, overcoming the distance between these churches, it was necessary to jump over the obstacles encountered on the way. Sports competitions of this kind originated from the national English game - horse hunting for foxes (the so-called parforskaya hunting).
One of the first steeplechase competitions was held in 1752 in County Cork, Ireland. They were attended by two jockeys, Cornelius O'Calligan and Edmund Blake, who competed in the 6.6 km distance between the church in Buttervant and the church in St. Leger. In England, the first official steeplechase competition was organized in 1830.
In addition to Great Britain, the most famous steeple chase competitions are the French " grand steeple chase de Paris" and the " big Pardubice steeple chase" in the Czech Republic, which is the most difficult and traumatic in the world.
Show jumping is another popular equestrian sport. overcoming obstacles on horseback. One of the first show jumping was organized in 1865 at the Royal Dublin Equestrian Show. In these competitions, both high and long jumps were evaluated, and in addition to purely sporting interest, they tested the jumping qualities of the most promising hunting horses. At the beginning, the jumps were performed in such a way that the rider leaned forward in front of the obstacle and back after overcoming it, since this manner of overcoming obstacles was practiced by the cavalry at that time. The modern way of overcoming obstacles was introduced by the famous Italian athlete Frederique Caprilli at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, which is still practiced today.
Today, to participate in world-class competitions, an athlete must pay a considerable fee. Most athletes are sponsored by sports clubs and organizations, as well as by individuals. Horse racing and show jumping are among the most popular sports in most countries of the world. In local competitions, athletes improve their skills and prepare for performances at a higher level.
However, despite the popularity of equestrian sports, most horses today are bred for pleasure. For horse owners, horseback riding is, in most cases, a pleasant hobby. They participate in various local horse parades and amusements. In picturesque areas, special tourist routes are organized for lovers of horseback riding. Moreover, for these trips, they often use not purebred horses, but aboriginal breeds of horses and ponies. Horse riding trips are organized almost all over the world today: in Russia, Austria, Spain, Scotland, etc. Equestrian safaris, which are organized in Africa, as well as imitation of horse hunting for foxes, for which Hungary is famous, are especially attractive. Recently, stylized “cowboy villages , where tourists live for a certain amount of time, ride a horse, get acquainted with the life of American cowboys, and also enjoy theatrical shows.
