When the winter cold gives way to spring warmth, it's time to start thinking about packing your horse's winter clothes for the summer, and part of that annual ritual is washing the blankets. However, this is not as easy as it seems.

Difficulties in doing laundry at home. Undoubtedly, there are blankets that you can wash yourself. Fanatical horse owners with strong hands and a lot of free time can even wash all the blankets on their own. There are horse owners who put their blankets in the washing machine, despite all her protesting groans. This is a bad idea because a blanket can become a shroud for your washing machine. Household washing machines are not designed to handle the amount of wool, dirt, and manure found on this blanket. What's more, using a household washing machine can damage the drainage system, which eventually gets clogged.

This does not mean that you cannot wash the blanket at home. The lighter and not too dirty blankets you use at the show can be washed with your machine. The blankets you use in the stall can also be machine washed if the space allows. If you are going to put the blanket in the washing machine, first check if there is enough space to wash it, otherwise, all the dirt will not be washed off. But this type of wash is not suitable for heavy, large blankets, which are unlikely to fit into a household washing machine.

If you decide to clean the blanket at home, first hang it on the fence and shake off the fur. Then use a stiff brush to brush over the blanket and brush off the dirt. The next step is to wet the blanket with water and rub it using a good detergent. It is better to use the powder on fabrics that require careful handling, especially if the blanket is waterproof. Then rinse it well and dry it completely before storing it.

One of the problems people face when washing blankets at home is that the blanket is difficult to rinse thoroughly, and the other is that it is not easy to dry completely. Folding damp blankets and putting them away for the summer will start to rot, so make sure they are completely dry before you pack them.

It is best to store blankets in a tightly closed box to prevent mice from nesting there. You can also use a plastic bag if tied well. Some horse owners keep clean blankets in plastic blanket bags that are zipped.

If you wash the blanket with a household machine, after washing, run it through the entire cycle without powder so that it rinses thoroughly. If even a small amount of detergent is left on the blanket, the horse may become irritated. Therefore, it is important to use a powder that contains the minimum amount of chemicals. Never use fabric softeners. Horses sweat under the blankets, and if powder particles remain in the blanket, this can lead to skin problems.

The price of cleaning pays off by the fact that the blanket will last you longer if it is taken up by professionals. As a rule, the blanket is not only cleaned, but also disinfected and removed from the unpleasant odor. After that, the blanket looks like new, it is already packed and ready for long-term storage.
