Misaki horse, or Misaki mind (Misaki horse) - breed of horses were originally creatures of Miazaki Prefecture (Japan). There are several theories regarding its origin. According to the first, misaki horses are descended from Chinese horses brought to Japan 2000 years ago. According to the second, the formation of the breed dates back to the end of the 17th century. According to DNA research, the breed is genetically close to the Przewalski horse. Most likely, misaki uma comes from Mongol-type horses, which entered the country through Korea around the 5th century AD.
Lives in a semi-wild state in the national reserve at Cape Toy (Kyushu Island). The Misaki horse is one of the few Japanese breeds that was originally bred clean.
Misaki horses first appeared in historical records from 1697, when the Akizuki family of the Takanabe clan took horses from wild pastures under their protection and created a breeding herd. During the Meiji Revolution (1868-1889), the herd was nationalized, and in 1874 the Japanese government handed it over to the Misaki Union.
The horses were free to graze, and only once a year were they selected for training, health checks and castration of stallions that were not suitable for breeding. The same system is used today. The only thing that has been added is an insecticide treatment that helps scare off blood-sucking insects.
In summer, horses live in two herds - Komatsu and Oogi, and in winter they are divided into small groups consisting of one stallion, several mares and their foals. Mares are usually loyal to the same stallion for many years. The average lifespan is about 14 years for stallions and about 16 years for mares. Misaki horses are very mobile, feeding they travel more than 15 km per day. In summer, the misaki of the mind graze on average 14-16 hours, and in winter 15-19 hours. The amount of plants eaten daily is 8-9 kg in summer and 6-8 kg in winter.
In the era of mechanization, the demand for horses used in agriculture began to fall. In the 1930s, a decision was made to improve the quality of the horses, leaving only the best stallions. Because of this, the population of the breed has declined greatly. And after the Second World War, when the herd was relocated to Cape Toy, misaki uma practically disappeared. In 1953 the breed was declared a national treasure.
