Aegean cat (Aegean cat) - a breed of cats that arose naturally, i.e. without human intervention. For thousands of years, Aegean cats have lived next to humans, but it was not until the 1990s that they attracted the attention of specialists, who discovered a number of similarities and common characteristics in the “yard” cats of Greece. This is the only Greek cat breed.

Based on their roots, the Aegean cats are quite freedom-loving, preferring fresh air and freedom to an enclosed space. Cats easily adapt to the regime of their owner. They are not only very loyal to the owner, but also incredibly intelligent, and their hunting instinct will always find its application, whether it be hunting for rodents or fishing. Yes Yes! Aegean cats go fishing on their own and thus get their own food. Cats are distinguished by a patient attitude towards children, preferring to retire on time and not release sharp claws.

Tips for the care of hair, ears, eyes, teeth and claws of an Aegean cat

History of the Aegean cat

The birthplace of the breed is one of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea. In Greece, Aegean cats are considered a national treasure. It is here that cats of the European type have shown themselves as unsurpassed hunters and human helpers. This breed appeared in the course of natural formation and crossing (naturally).

Aegean cats would have remained unknown if they had not attracted the attention of specialists in the 1990s.

Locals in Greece have long noticed that these cats are not only very loyal to their owner, but also incredibly smart. And their hunting instinct will always find its application in human life and activities. In rural areas, cats are great at hunting various pests, and cats living on the seashore are excellent fishermen. For this, they gather in peculiar groups for fishing. Fish is a favorite treat for these cats.

The Aegean breed has a special attitude to water - cats are very fond of swimming and can sit for hours on the shore of the reservoir, waiting for the owner to return from fishing. They are the BEST friends of avid fishermen.

Appearance

Aegean cats are medium-sized animals with elongated, slender, muscular bodies and strong legs.

The head is medium in size, broad but not round. The nose is straight, of medium length.

The eyes are almond-shaped. Any shade of green is allowed.

The ears are set wide apart, broad at the base and tapering towards the tip, with rounded tips and covered with hair.

Paws are of medium size, pads are round in shape with rather tenacious claws.

The tail is of medium length, thick, straight, without knots or kinks.

The coat is of medium length; the coat on the tail is slightly longer than on the body. Moderately hard, thick. Despite the absence of undercoat, the coat protects the cat well in the cold season.

White almost always occupies 2/3 of the total color of the cat (in rare cases - 1/3). The most common color is creamy white bicolor. However, you can often find beautiful combinations of white with blue, black, silver, red, etc. There are animals with striped marks.

The nature and temperament of the Aegean cat

Based on their roots, the Aegean cats are quite free-loving, because they prefer fresh air and freedom (walks, trips, travel) to an enclosed space. But even in decent home conditions, they adapt well. Nevertheless, they simply need "forays" into nature - these cats wither without movement and walks.

Aegean cats are lively, sociable, open-minded and curious pets that prefer to take an active part in family affairs and do not hesitate to show their loyalty to their owner. Aegean cats treat strangers and guests of the house with understanding and friendliness. They can be the first to make contact, allowing themselves to be stroked.

Aegean cats easily adapt to the regime of their owner - they are awake and sleeping with him at the same time, so do not be afraid that the pet will constantly demand attention to itself during the owner's rest. These cats are not only very loyal to their owner, but also incredibly intelligent. And their hunting instinct will always find its application in human life. Cats living on the seashore are excellent anglers. Therefore, if you have an aquarium or a pond with koi carp at home, you need to protect the fish from the cat.

Representatives of this breed are strong and hardy.

Aegean cats are distinguished by their patient attitude towards children, preferring to retire on time and not release sharp claws. They get along great with others and get along well with other animals, but they will not let themselves be offended.

They are quite active and curious. To maintain good physical shape in an apartment it is necessary to install a "cat tree" and the harder and higher it is, the better. If you live in a country house, then a spacious enclosure on the site or some kind of fenced-in place where the Aegean cat can walk, hunt and rest would be ideal.

These cats prefer active and mobile games: running after the ball, hunting for fur mice and squeaking animals, foraging with puzzle games, etc.
