The skill of moving near the owner is not as easy to execute as it seems. Indeed, according to a single command "Near!", According to the test conditions of OKD and IPO, the dog must start moving, stop and sit down, make turns in place and in motion, change the pace of movement, while being at the left leg, at a distance of the width of the croup away from it, so that the dog's right shoulder blade is at the level of the person's left knee. Moreover, a well-bred dog should do all this without a leash, regardless of whether cats are running around, people are walking or four-legged enemies are barking, it is not easy to form such behavior, how not just to maintain it at the proper performing level throughout the dog's life.

The movement of the dog next to the trainer on a leash. This skill is necessary when training a dog in the course of Educational training (movement next to the trainer) and IPO-1 (movement of the dog next to the trainer on a leash), but, in addition, it is also necessary as a preparatory stage for teaching the dog to move next to the trainer without a leash.

Any skill is easier to form, reproduced more likely, and lasts longer, if it is appropriate, that is, it satisfies any need of the animal. To practice movement next to the trainer, food needs (food motivation) are sometimes used when working with a hungry dog. Then the skill is included in the food-gathering repertoire of behavior, and the command means that you can satisfy your hunger by performing the desired action. This happens when you really work with a hungry dog!

Or they use the motivation of selective appetite, when performing an action gives the dog the opportunity to get something very tasty from his point of view, while the dog can be full.

Training methods that use food motivation are especially good when working with puppies or young dogs with a pronounced food interest (need) or when the owner is much weaker than his pet physically, but stronger mentally and may not feed his child to create a pronounced nutritional need.

The training technique is very simple: you take a piece of food in your left hand and after giving the command with a movement of your hand with a piece, you suggest the puppy to take the desired position. This method is called the guidance method, since we direct the dog to the actions we need by moving our hand with food.

In the first step, the duration of which depends on your dog and how often you exercise, you feed the puppy and give him praise that he is in the correct position at your left foot on command while in place. When, after giving the command, the puppy begins to take the desired position on its own, proceed to the second stage, reward it with food after a short exposure. In the future, the exposure time must be increased. At the third stage, the puppy is accustomed to a rectilinear movement at an average pace - it can be led with the help of a piece of food clamped in the left hand, from time to time feeding the puppy. In the same way, leading the dog behind your hand, you need to act when turning.

The use of food does not preclude the use of a leash - when necessary, you can hold the dog or slightly tighten it. This way you can also use the pushing method.

The success of the skill development by the proposed method depends primarily on the amount of nutritional needs; if it is not large enough, the dog will be guided by other needs in its behavior. And although positive emotions are an advantage, which makes training attractive to the dog, this method cannot guarantee that the command is followed.

To consolidate the skill, the dog's need for self-preservation is most often used with the help of negative reinforcement. Negative reinforcement can be a strong jerk with a leash, an electric shock (with an electric collar), or a whip. The peculiarity of this method of training is the obligation to execute the command, since the need for self-preservation is always more important than other needs. The speed of skill development and the obligation to perform to some extent depends on the strength of negative reinforcement - the stronger the market with a leash, the faster the dog will take the correct position. However, if the strength of the negative reinforcement is extremely high, it can lead to refusal of work or inadequate reaction of the dog.
