Video: Sit Command (IPO I)
Teaching a dog to sit is not difficult. There are many ways to find the best fit for your dog
In order to use the already familiar method of guidance, take the treat in your right hand, turn half-turn to the dog that is on your left and which you hold with your left hand, show her a piece, give the command to Sit! and, making a movement with a hand with a treat from the dog's nose up and back, so that it reaches for him, sit it down. I must say that this is the best way, especially for a puppy. It turns out that animals are better at remembering what they do themselves and worse is what they are forced to do. So, after reaching for food, the dog should sit down by itself.
In the first lesson, you can give a treat immediately after the dog sits down, but starting with the second, you must, well, simply must, reward the dog after endurance - keeping the dog in a given pose. To do this, you can hold a treat in front of the dog's nose, clenched in a fist, and open it at the right time for you, giving it the opportunity to eat a piece. Thus, you are making it clear to the dog that to get food you need to sit, and not just sit! Or hold the dog with your left hand, and offer it food reinforcement with your right hand, several times during the pause. And then she will understand that you can get more if you sit longer. That is, you must learn yourself that you must reinforce not only the fact of landing, but also the preservation of this posture, that is, endurance, if you want the dog not to jump up immediately after he sits down and receives a piece.
But if your dog is very mobile and extremely interested in food and therefore does not wait for you to give it a piece, and itself, jumping, trying to get it, you can use the pushing method. If the puppy is wearing a collar, grab it with your right hand, and place your left hand with an open palm on the puppy's lower back and sit it down with no painful, pushing movements. Hold for 2-3 seconds and serve the treat. If the puppy is no longer a puppy, but a young dog, it is more convenient to seat him, making simultaneous movements with his hands - with the right (which is holding the collar), we pull the dog back, and with the left (which is lying on the croup), we push it down.
There are dogs, including young ones, who do not want to obey and do not recognize the pedagogical significance of the first two methods. With such you have to fight using a defensive method. To do this, forcing the dog to sit down, we make movements with our hands as when using the pushing method, but the strength of our influences is such that it causes pain or discomfort to the dog. This method makes the dog realize that after the command is given, troubles can be expected in the region of the sacrum, so it is better to remove the "ass" in advance. And cleans up! The same effect can be achieved by slapping the dog's rump with the palm, leash or whip. At the same time, it is very important to correctly dose the force of influence - it should not cause reactions of panic fear, but, at the same time, lead to the fulfillment of the required. Using a defensive method seems to be quick to achieve success. But the dog, associating the command with possible subsequent troubles, will also avoid situationsin which this command is given in order to avoid these very possible troubles.
In order for the first two methods to work, increase the importance of reinforcement - do not feed the dog for a while, Hunger will force it, forgetting "pride and independence", trying to get a piece, to fulfill the required.
By the way, if you already have an adult, well-bred dog, you can use the method of imitation. Place your adult dog in the middle of the room, and repeat the command often and loudly, feed him in full view of the puppy. You will need a little patience before a puppy jumping with excitement realizes what a pack buddy is being praised for.
There is another, well, very funny way, which allows you to teach a dog to sit without touching it with your hands. This method is called selection of behavior. But for that, your dog must be hungry enough to make food reinforcement its most important goal.
The essence of the method is as follows: after preparing a food supplement, put it in front of you on the table, take a few pieces in your hand, sit on a chair (more tightly and more comfortable, maybe you will have to sit for a long time, call the puppy, show him a treat and memorized (sorry, like a parrot), but loudly and joyfully repeat the command until he sits down. As soon as he sits down, immediately give the whole handful of delicacies and, if he continues to sit, the same amount. We will depict violent delight, stroke, say tender words, kiss in the nose and some command to release the puppy Believe me, at the beginning the training will go slowly, but when the dog understands what leads him to success, it will sit as tightly as a well-glued parquetina. This is later, but at the beginning you will have to see the whole your puppy's behavioral repertoire - he will jump, then run away,it will start barking, it will start hitting you with its paw, but sooner or later it will sit down. It won't even sit down, but it will sit down. Hurry up to feed him. If you have time, then by the end of the evening the puppy will understand everything.
There is one more difficulty - the struggle with oneself. Observing the chaotic movements of the puppy, I just want to grab it with my hands and show what needs to be done. Be patient, and control yourself, not the puppy.
When you teach your puppy to sit, you can move on to the second stage - combining the dog's approach and landing. At the beginning, before landing, you can give the day commands: "Near!" and "Sit!" Then, the command "Sit!" must be lowered, achieving landing only with the command "Near!"
When this stage is mastered in the apartment, go out into the street, of course, with the dog on a leash. And every 2-3 minutes, call the dog and seat it according to the requirements of the main stance. At the beginning, take your time, choose quiet, calm places and gradually, from 5 seconds, start increasing the exposure time. For a young dog (up to 10 months of age), an exposure of 1 minute is sufficient. By the age of one, try to keep your dog sitting for five minutes.
When you go outside, you have additional options, because the leash is a great way to control your dog. With the help of a leash, it will be easy for you to remind your dog of what she met in the apartment. By pushing, with the help of non-painful jerks of the leash, it will be easy for you to help the dog to get into the correct position. If it is distracted, breaks down to the dog, cat or passers-by, you can use defensive motivation and increase the jerk to painful.
And that's all, train your dog in any place: by the road, on the sidewalk, in the middle of the roadway, in front of dogs and other cats, in front of the entrance door, in short, wherever you deem necessary. But if the team is "near!" dana seek obedience to the dog at all costs. The dog can change position or move away from you only on another command. By the way, try not to "litter" the team. The command that you worked to the skill state is only used when it is needed in earnest. In other cases, when you yourself admit optional conditions, it is better to use some kind of "kitchen" commands, such as - "Sit down!", "Sit down!", "Wait!" etc.
