From the point of view of hair care, four groups of dog breeds can be distinguished. In the first place in terms of the complexity of preparation for the exhibition are dogs whose hair is sheared or plucked: poodles, terriers, schnauzers and cocker spaniels.

The following can be called long-haired breeds, in which the coat must be combed regularly. There are a lot of such dogs: from miniature Pekingese to solid bobtail. The next group is short-haired dogs: boxers, Dobermans and the like. And, finally, the fourth group - hairless dogs (Chinese crested, Peruvian Inca orchid, Mexican hairless), whose hair care is not needed in the absence of such. True, the owners of such dogs have a problem with skin care.

However, one should not think that short-haired dogs do not require grooming of their coat. Recently, my neighbors were worried about the behavior of their Labrador: he was constantly scratching and lying on his back during walks, preferring gravel as a "bedding". It turned out that the dog's undercoat simply died out, after combing it out with the appropriate tool, the behavior that bothered the owners stopped.

So, the vast majority of breeds require grooming, and this requires the right tools.

Combs and their varieties. Combs are the main tool for working with wool. General requirement for all combs: the ends of the teeth must be bluntotherwise you risk injuring your dog. The length of the teeth should be the longer, the longer the coat. As for the frequency of the teeth, it is selected depending on the density of the wool. In any case, it is recommended to have at least two combs: one, a larger one, for roughing and combing out tangles, and the other, smaller, for finishing. It is believed that combs with a gap between the teeth of less than 0.5 mm are suitable for combing out fleas, but this is practically impossible with coarse and thick coat. However, such a comb will allow you to effectively comb out dying hair (it was such a tool that helped the Labrador, which was mentioned at the beginning of the article).

For dogs with soft long hair, massage brushes are convenient, and for short-haired dogs, bristle brushes are almost indistinguishable from wardrobe brushes.

A slicker is a type of comb that is indispensable when working with long and soft hair. The main requirement, as for combs, is that the ends of the teeth must be blunt. It is very simple to check this: run the teeth of the slicker along the back of your hand, while the teeth should not scratch the skin. The size of a slicker is desirable medium, the length of the sides of the head is 5-7 cm. For a large dog, you can take a larger one, but do not get carried away: large slickers are inconvenient and do not give practical benefits in work. When buying, make sure the teeth are firmly seated: they should not be too loose.

Another type of comb, the purpose of which is clear from the name, is a collar cutter. Finally, there are many varieties of tools that can be combined with the name "comb". The main purpose of these tools is to comb out dead hair or undercoat. This also includes rubber brushes and special gloves.

Scissors. When cutting dogs, hairdressing scissors and their "dog" varieties are used. According to their purpose, scissors are divided into ordinary (shearing) and thinning scissors, which have serrated blades and are designed to thin out wool and form transitions at the borders of the cutting zones. Scissors are one of those tools where you don't have to chase the "firm". Moreover, there are fakes under well-known brands that differ from the originals in only one quality - they do not cut. Domestic scissors are of very high quality and are inferior to imported ones only in terms of durability, but this is compensated by the difference in price.

When choosing scissors, look at them "in the light", closing them very slowly - the contact between the blades should be constant, in fully closed scissors the blades are closed at the very tips, The force when closing the scissors: should be constant, without noticeable jamming and failures. Defects, deformation of the blades can also be determined by ear: with good scissors, when the blades are closed at a constant speed, the sound is uniform.

It is desirable for owners of "clipping" dogs to have at least three pairs of scissors: thinning, regular long and short with blunt ends, which are convenient for processing ears, paw pads, etc.

Trimming knives. This tool is used when plucking terrier and schnauzer fur. Its second purpose is to comb out dead hair, but a tool with long teeth is better for this.

Successful homemade products are extremely rare, so it is better to buy a "branded" tool. Trimming knives (and other hand tools) produced by the companies "Esculap", "Karli", "Trixi" are very popular.

Of the many varieties, you should select the tool that suits your dog's coat: a trimmer that pulls off coarse and tough coat well, weak coat can trim, and fine coat is difficult to grip.
