A cat has sweat glands along the surface of its skin, with the exception of the nasal skin, which is completely free of glands.

The misconception seems to be due to the fact that there are two types of sweat glands: eccrine sweat, found only on the pads of the paws, and apocrine, found everywhere, especially on the skin of the cat's scrotum.

In humans, the eccrine glands are of great importance as a source of sweat, which in hot conditions cools the body by evaporation. In this sense, the glands help regulate body temperature by maintaining a constant temperature. But in a cat that only has these glands on the pads, they play little role in regulating temperature. And nevertheless, it is noticeable that on a hot day, on a smooth surface, the cat leaves a wet footprint. These glands also function when emotionally aroused, just like the glands on the palms of a person, in whom the effect of sweaty hands can be observed during periods of anxiety and anxiety. Thus, a frightened cat, for example, during a veterinary examination, can leave wet marks, which are especially clearly visible on a dark surface.
