Fluke alaria alata (Alaria alata), parasitizing in the intestines of dogs, wolves, foxes and cats, reaches 2.4-4.4 millimeters in length and 1.2-2.1 millimeters wide. At the front end, alaria are rather large, resembling wings, outgrowths, which is why, apparently, they gave the worm the name “alaria” - “winged”.

Living in the intestines of the animal, alaria lay eggs. Eggs in the water form embryos. At an optimal temperature of 21-27 ° C, this takes 11-12 days. A decrease in ambient temperature delays the development of embryos.

Alaria eggs can remain viable throughout the winter, but provided that they are under the snow. Those of them who find themselves in places where there is no snow die. In just ten minutes, the eggs will suffer the same fate when dried.

The embryos that emerged from the eggs penetrate the body of the freshwater mollusks of the coils. The development of larvae in them at a temperature of 22-24 degrees lasts 35-45 days, and at a temperature of 18-19 ° C - 77 days. The larvae that got out of the molluscs end up in the bodies of tadpoles and frogs, where they continue to develop further until they are covered with a shell.

In tadpoles, the larvae with a shell are located in the tail and in the body cavity, in frogs - in the muscles of the tongue, in the submandibular muscles and much less often in the muscles of the paws.

When a cat eats a frog or tadpoles infected with alaria larvae, they develop alariasis. Cats, brought out of town for the first time, to the dacha, go to the garden or garden to hunt and often bring their prey to the door of their owners - a frog. Later, having learned that there is, it turns out, more tasty and high-calorie prey - mice, hunters stop catching frogs.

However, another way of penetration of alaria into the organism of animals is also possible. A live frog, in the muscles of which there are fluke larvae, can be eaten by a snake, a bird of prey or an animal, and a dead or dead frog, a dead tadpole can be of interest to mice, moles. In the bodies of these animals, the larvae cannot continue their development, but they do not die.

When the body of the intermediate host or part of it is digested, the larvae penetrate through the intestinal walls of the reservoir host into the tissues of various organs, mainly into the subcutaneous tissue, and remain in them, maintaining their viability for a long time. And as soon as this host is eaten by a cat, the larva will turn into an adult worm in its body. However, before this happens, it goes on a journey: it penetrates through the walls of the stomach or intestines into the abdominal cavity of the animal. Then it makes its way to the diaphragm and through it - into the chest cavity.

After the larva is in the stomach of the animal, it only takes a day for it to find itself in the lungs. Here, the larvae linger for up to 12 days and, having completed the next stage of their development, go on a journey again: they pass into the lumen of the bronchi and from there they enter the mouth through the trachea, larynx and pharynx, and from it - again into the intestines, where, finally, after 30 45 days become able to lay eggs.

During the migration of larvae from the intestine or stomach to the lungs, inflammatory foci appear in the tissues and organs as they move. They are most significant in the lungs.

Adult alaria, especially if there are many of them, cause inflammation of the mucous membranes of the stomach and small intestine.

With a small amount of alaria in the animal's body, there are no symptoms of the disease. When animals, especially young ones, swallow a lot of larvae of alaria, their body temperature rises after a few days. The general condition of such animals is depressed, breathing is heavy, wheezing in the lungs and other signs of inflammation of this organ appear. As a result, the animals die.

With a strong infection of young animals with adult alaria, they also develop digestive disorders - diarrhea, sometimes vomiting. And in this case, the animals may die.

Treatment. Cats are given 5 milligrams per kilogram of droncite (praziquantel).
