Like humans, many older cats suffer from cognitive decline. This syndrome is called senile dementia.
In the wild, cats rarely live long enough for this condition to manifest. Researchers have identified a key protein that causes brain impairment similar to that seen in people with Alzheimer's. Thanks to the short lifespan of cats, scientists have the opportunity to observe the development of this disease and look for ways to combat it.
Cats do not live long, and effective nutrition and proper treatment should not be underestimated to prolong their life and improve its quality. Mental stimulation and companionship reduce the risk of developing dementia in both humans and cats.
