Why are cat shows held? There are several answers to this question. Firstly, it is the popularization of cat breeds, animal advertising, some kind of educational event. Secondly, this is a zootechnical event, that is, breeding selection of animals for breeding.

At the show, animals are compared with a standard (ideal) and receive different grades and titles.Cats are also compared with each other. The task of the judge is to select the best animals for breeding, to show the cats that are closest to the modern type in each breed. The best cats are marked (they receive titles, win the Best-in-Show contests. At the same time, the judge notes the shortcomings and defects in animals so that this is taken into account in breeding. According to their rank, there are advertising exhibitions (without cat expertise) - these are just propaganda of breeds, display of animals, and evaluation.Among the evaluation exhibitions, we will single out club exhibitions (without awarding titles, the minimum number of cats, conducts club - national (awarding titles no higher than CAC - candidate, champion; expert examination is given by a national judge) and international (awarded all titles; expert examination of an international category judge) Since 1990, the FFA, and then the WCF, have been hosting world championships. There are also exhibitions of special status - specialized - for certain color breeds.

Registration for the exhibition. When registering for a show, the breeder must clarify everything necessary. Does this judge judge the breed, what system is used for the judging? The issue of "new" breeds, not recognized by all organizations, is especially important. The breeder should find out if the judge is judging the breed, if it has a standard by which the club operates. We advise the owners of such breeds to always have a standard for your breed with them, preferably not only in Russian, but also in English.

When filling out the application, write clearly and preferably in block letters, following the points on the application sheet. Be careful when describing color, date of birth, class. It is sometimes important to observe the bureaucratic "subtleties". So, in American pedigrees, first comes the month, then the date - if you make a mistake, the animal can change the class (young - open). It is desirable to write the color in words and then in common symbols. Most clubs use a very logical and user-friendly FIFe system. Nicknames are written as indicated in the pedigree, in full. The owner is indicated, the club in which he is a member. Avoid submitting applications on the last day, especially by phone - inaccuracies can lead to confusion and mistakes when judging at the exhibition. The representative of the club must inform you about the date of the show, address, the beginning of registration and the end of judging. Also check the veterinary requirements. Today, this is the presence of a veterinary passport with vaccinations, a certificate in Form 4 (for Moscow) and the passage of paid veterinary control. Take care of your cat's health ahead of time - all vaccinations must be done well in advance. Find out if your cat can be housed in your own crate or not. If all cages are provided by the club, specify the sizes. Prepare a carrier (preferably a plastic one with a metal door), toilet, water, bowl, curtains and other decorations for the cage.Don't forget your cat's cosmetic bag, toilet paper.

Judging systems. It is very difficult for a novice breeder to understand the rules of judging, experts and systems. It is easiest to get advice from your club about recommended and recognized shows, although some chairmen are not always consistent. So, for example, the judging of one judge at an exhibition held by one club is recognized, and the same judge is not recognized at the exhibition of another club. Some systems do not allow two examinations in one day, but recognize one assessment at an exhibition as "visiting". This is the right of every organization and club, only the breeder must clearly understand everything. The club can recommend a list of recognized experts and a calendar of exhibitions. Several international associations are currently operating in Russia, so we will not make any recommendations. However, it should be borne in mind that the standards of breeds (short-haired,for example) are different in Europe from the USA.

American experts have their own view not only of standards, but also of shortcomings and vices. When registering for exhibitions, for example, under the CFA system, you need to be registered in this system (the so-called "green card"), otherwise you will not be able to issue a CFA champion certificate. FIFe shows accept independent breeders and breeders from other organizations with their titles. However, for FIFe members, titles from other systems do not count. The difference between international systems leads to the fact that each international association prepares judges according to its own standards and rules, which inevitably affects the judging. Thus, breeders are often perplexed: at one show the cat received titles, nominations, and at another - only "excellent" no title. Often cat owners cannot understand this and conflicts arise. What determines the assessment of a cat?

We have already noted that an exhibition is a comparison. Getting first among, say, three Siamese is one thing. Getting the title and being the best in breed among 15 cats of the eastern group is a completely different matter. Therefore, the score depends on the level of competition. And, of course, the victory in a large breed group will be more prestigious and more expensive. The cat's assessment also depends on the qualifications and literacy of the expert, on his "vision" of the breed. (So, one judge from America put the CFA extreme type cat in second place and explained that she does not like the extreme type).
