The history of racing training goes back many centuries. It is based on certain types of work with a step, trot and gallop. The main high-speed training load is a high-speed canter, carried out at a distance of 500 to 2000 m and more. As a rule, a high-spirited gallop is carried out once, at the end of a training session.

When working with a racehorse, it is necessary to apply various training works aimed at increasing the functional capabilities while using all the reserves of energy production and regulation of life processes in the animal. Below is the optimal training scheme for thoroughbred horses.

The preparatory period (October-April) is divided into two stages

The first stage (November-January). Tasks: preparing the horse's body for more intense and prolonged work, strengthening the muscular and tendon-ligamentous apparatus, developing strength and general endurance.

With a total volume of work at a trot over 20-25 minutes, it is necessary to carry out it in two reprise with 3-5 minute intervals of movement in steps. Long-term trotting at a steady pace contributes to the development of general endurance. When working at a trot, several 200-300 m long segments should be included on the rise, on plowing or on deep snow. These will be exercises of a strength nature, as well as to strengthen the muscular and tendon-ligamentous apparatus.

At the end of the first stage (January), for two-year-old horses, you can carry out several intensive trainings: a high-spirited gallop at 200-300 m, a sweep of 500-600 m in order to prepare the horses' body for more intensive work in the spring.

Second stage (February - April). Tasks: continuation of the development of strength qualities and general endurance, the use of special loads for the development of speed endurance.

The volume of work at a trot at this stage is significantly reduced and is limited to 10-20 minutes. From the end of February, it is possible to carry out canter work 3-4 times a week in 2 reprise with a 5-8 minute interval: for two-year-olds approximately 1500 + 2000 m on a good track and 1200 + 1500 m on a hard track; for horses three years old and older - 2400 + 3000 m (good track) and 1400 + 2000 m (hard track).

From the second half of March, due to the reduction in canter work, a fast gallop should be carried out 1-2 times a week for a distance of up to 500-800 m for two-year-olds and up to 1000 - 1200 m for horses 3 years old and older.

Competition period (May-September). During the hippodrome trials, the volume of training loads should be within: trot - 10-15 minutes, canter for two-year-olds - 1800-2400 m, for horses three years old and older - 2400-3600 m with a significant increase in intensity due to quick gallops and performances.

During this period, an individual approach to horse training is very important. This especially concerns the planning of days, distance and agility of training at a gallop. As a rule, quick work is allowed once a week, however, there may be stages in preparation for a number of prizes when quick gallops are used more often, mainly for horses 3 years old and older. In this case, the trainer must take into account the individual characteristics of the horses, their general clinical and physiological condition.

Transition period (September-October). This is a period of active rest when horses are not under intense stress. During this period, they are limited to work at a walk (1-1.5 hours), at a trot (up to 10-15 minutes). If possible, horses should be released into the levada for 2-3 hours during daylight hours.

By the end of the transition period, the duration of trotting is increased to 20-25 minutes.

A chart tailored to the age and fitness of the horse can provide guidance to trainers in group and individual planning and daily training.

Individual training plans should provide for a gradual increase in the volume of loads, the use of high-speed work, corresponding to the functional capabilities of the horse, as well as a certain alternation of tension in training. The plan may be adjusted to reflect the horse's performance.

In racetrack trials of thoroughbred horses, a group system is used: from the fourth group to the first, and also outside the group. Two-year-old horses, upon entering the racetrack, are enrolled in the fourth group. When winning the first place, the horse is transferred to the next group.

When the traditional prize is won, the horse is transferred to the next group after one, and the second place winner is transferred to the next group.

A horse aged 3, 4 years and older who entered the racetrack are grouped according to their winnings in the previous season. Horses 3 years and older that did not race or won first place in the previous season are assigned to the fourth group.
