Description: Lucania resembles large guppies in appearance. Dorsal fins have 9-13 rays, pectoral fins 4-7, anal fins 15-18, caudal fins 5-9.

The body is laterally compressed, the mouth is small, upturned, the teeth are conical, the maxillary and mandibular teeth are single-row. The head is smoothed from above, the muzzle is blunt. The dorsal and caudal fins are rounded. Females are larger than males (on average by 6 mm).

Color: pale - the upper body is brown-olive, the sides and belly are silvery, on each scale there is a dark border, which gives the fish a chain mail pattern. The fins are transparent.

During the breeding season, males develop a black spot in front of the dorsal fin; tail, anal and pelvic fins are colored orange-red with a black border. The anal fin is yellow.
