History of the breed
The history of the Neva Masquerade Cat begins at the end of the 20th century. This is a fairly young breed that is gaining more and more popularity. Purposefully breeding the Neva Masquerades began only in 1987. The breed was officially recognized by international organizations in 1992. But not all organizations recognize it as an independent breed.
In fact, the Neva Masquerade cat is a kind of color-point Siberian cat in its pure form or with various white spots on the body and limbs. "Siberians" are the progenitors of many modern breeds of semi-long-haired cats. In Russia, such cats have been known since the 18th century, since the time of Peter the Great. The exact origin of the breed is unknown.
The breeding of masquerade cats was first started in St. Petersburg, in the Kotofey club under the guidance of breeder Olga Mironova. Actually, this gave the name to the breed - "Nevskaya" - in honor of the river on which the city stands. The second name - "masquerade" - the cat owes a peculiar color: the dark hair on the muzzle looks like a mask.
Further breeding work continued in Moscow. St. Petersburg and Moscow nurseries preferred to work independently of each other. The long way of world recognition of the Siberian breed began in 1987, when the first breed standard was prepared in the Kotofey club. This was the time when the first cat lovers' clubs appeared in the USSR.
The final breed standard was approved on December 4, 1994 at the WCF session with the participation of delegates from Russia and the CIS, to which felinologists from other international cat associations were also invited. In 1992, the breed was officially recognized by the WCF, and in 1997 - by the FIFe. The breed standard of the Neva Masquerade cat is identical to the breed standard of the Siberian cat, except for the color of the coat and eyes.

The Neva Masquerade cats were presented by Russian officials as diplomatic gifts. It was reported that Vladimir Putin gave one of them to the Japanese governor, and Dmitry Medvedev to the former president of Finland.
Currently, the Siberian and Neva Masquerade cats have conquered the whole world to Australia and South Africa. Asia did not stand aside (in Japan, Singapore and other countries there are nurseries of these breeds).

The nature and temperament of the Neva Masquerade cat
Neva Masquerade Cat is suitable for those who want to have an animal in the house, gentle as a cat and loyal as a dog. They are very attached to their owners. For care and affection, these cats will always answer you with the same coin. Strangers are treated wary, but not aggressive.
Neva masquerades are not intrusive, they will not constantly crawl to your knees for caresses and at the same time meow plaintively. Cats are quite independent and do not require much attention to themselves. An agitated or upset owner can easily be soothed and consoled by melodious purrs and quiet cooing. They do not tolerate prolonged loneliness. These cats are moderately playful and active, and this breed has absolutely no rancor.
They are smart, curious, and easily adapt to new conditions. They are not conflicting, have innate good manners and high intelligence. You will have to come to terms with the fact that your pet has certain likes and dislikes. Neva Masquerades are easy to get used to the rules and order in your home. They are very curious and stick their little noses everywhere.
They tolerate travel well and love to travel. They walk with pleasure in any weather, and if this is not possible, they observe life behind glass, lying on the windowsill. If possible, they show their excellent hunting skills, bringing "gifts" to their beloved owners - the birds and rodents they have got.
Representatives of the breed are distinguished by their poise, strong nervous system and a healthy psyche. Behavior can be called aristocratic: animals are graceful, neat, affectionate. They are characterized by a love of freedom, sometimes stubbornness, so you must show that you are more stubborn, and in the end the cat will know what is allowed and what is not. They will never wet their shoes or mark the carpet because they are upset about being punished. Instead, they will simply turn their backs on you to show that you are wrong.

Neva Masquerade cats are recommended for families with children. Kids are protected, show attention and care, willingly play with older children. Non-aggressive: an adult cat will prefer to retire rather than use teeth and claws. If the child cries, the cat will immediately be there and will try to comfort him.
They get along well with other animals (cats and dogs), especially if they grow up together. And they perceive rodents and birds as prey.
Neva Masquerade cats, especially kittens, love water, love to climb and jump. They love fresh running water and will drink tap water or cat fountain water, preferring to drink it from a bowl of water. They can happily frolic in the bath for hours, both independently and together with the owner.
In order to stay in good physical shape, it is recommended to purchase a cat tree, and the harder it is, the better. From toys for these cats, feather, interactive and puzzle toys (including with food) are suitable.
Sometimes these cats are quite talkative, they are famous for their extensive vocabulary of various sounds that they make when communicating with the owner.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is considered among the most common and most dangerous diseases. This condition can even occur in healthy adult cats, so it is recommended that cardiac echocardiography be done annually. In some lines (about 5-7%) polycystic kidney disease (PKD) occurs, which manifests itself at the age of 6-7 years. You should be aware that a cat diagnosed with PKD can live a normal, happy life without any pain or discomfort.
With inadequate dental care, Neva Masquerade cats have gingivitis and periodontitis, so it is very important to monitor the condition of the pet's teeth and gums.
Overweight cats (especially over six years old) may develop hip dysplasia and other deformities.
Neva Masquerade cats are often called hypoallergenic and this is partially true, since absolutely hypoallergenic cats do not exist. According to scientific studies, Neva Masquerade cats do cause much fewer allergic reactions in humans than other breeds. The fact is that the body of the Neva Masquerades produces very little fel d1 protein, which is responsible for human allergies. Typically, cats produce up to 63,000 micrograms of Fel-Dh1, while a female Siberian (Neva Masquerade) cat produces only 200 micrograms of Fel-Dh1 per gram. To make sure that you are not allergic to this breed, you need to visit the breeder and interact with the cats in person.
