The Tersk horse was bred in horse breeding farms in the Stavropol Territory. The main breeding nucleus was created at the Tersk stud farm, by the name of which the breed got its name. It was approved as an independent in November 1948.

When breeding the Terek horse, a complex reproductive cross was used. Strelets, Don, Kabardian, Arab and other riding horse breeds were used as the initial selection material. The last streltsy stallions, outstanding in their qualities, the Connoisseur half-brothers (born in 1910) and the snow-white Cylinder (born in 1911), were very successfully used in breeding. The famous Arabian stallion Obeyan-Silver was listed in their pedigrees. The Streletskaya breed was used as a cementing breed, through which the desirable qualities of oriental and aboriginal horses were combined.

The best hybrids were selected for the tribe, which they mated with each other, securing the valuable economic qualities of the original breeds in the offspring. Related breeding (inbreeding) was widely used. The selection took into account not only the type, origin, conformation, height, working capacity, but also the adaptation of horses to the conditions of cultural herd keeping.

Tersk horses are of strong constitution, harmonious constitution. They are somewhat larger than Arabian horses, but on the exterior they are close to them. Horses are distinguished by a pronounced oriental breed and strong limbs.

The movements are light and smooth. The color of the horses is predominantly light gray with a dull silvery sheen, about a quarter of the representatives of the breed are red; occasionally also a bay color is found. Tersk horses are not large, but in recent years, thanks to selection and selection, their measurements have increased markedly. They are harmoniously built, have characteristic riding forms and pronounced oriental elegance.

The dimensions of the brood mares recorded in the II volume of the State Book are as follows, cm height at withers - 156, chest girth - 181.9, cannon girth - 19.2. Stud stallions are distinguished by their larger stature and powerful build.

Horses are raised in stable and pasture conditions. Weaning of foals from their mothers is carried out at the age of 6-8 months. The best youngsters at the age of one and a half years enter the training department and, starting at the age of two, are tested in smooth races. Speed 20-50 km / h. All-Union breed record for horses from 4 years old at 3200 m: 3 min 38 s (1969).

In the course of breeding work on the breed in order to study its properties and prospects, three types of Terek horses were identified: characteristic (main), light (eastern) and thick. In breeding work, representatives of the eastern type are valued as a source of breed and pronounced superiority of the warehouse. Such horses are more demanding in terms of keeping conditions, in comparison with the other two types, in particular, they are less tolerant of herd keeping. Tersk horses of the third, so-called "thick" type, differ markedly from the rest of the breed. They are more massive, large, broad-bodied in all statues, bony and muscular. The dense type is the smallest in the breed; no more than 20% of the queens belonged to it.

Build: head of medium size, light, graceful, with a straight or concave profile; eyes are large, expressive; ears of medium length, pointed, well set; the neck is rather long, set high, beautifully arched; withers of medium height, well muscled; the back is short, wide, strong; the loin is short, with well-developed muscles; the chest is wide, deep; the croup is wide, of medium length, normally deflated or straight, well muscled; legs well built, dry and strong, with very small brushes; the forearms are long and well-formed; the hocks are strong and dry; hooves are small, very strong, well formed; the mane and tail are thin and short.

The most valuable quality of Terek horses is their versatility. They showed themselves well in distance runs, triathlon, show jumping, dressage and even in driving, in which, in addition to agility, ease of control, maneuverability, and the ability to abruptly change gaits are important. These horses were even used in Russian troikas as a pin.

Due to its exceptional good nature, the breed is very popular in children's equestrian sports and in hippotherapy. And her high level of intelligence allows her to show outstanding abilities for training, so Terek horses are most often used in circus shows. Tertsy are quite hardy, have good health and are distinguished by longevity.

The best representatives of the breed showed good results in big sports. The stallion Dnepr was the USSR champion in triathlon; on stallion Tskheti won a gold medal in the team event at the XXII Olympic Games in Eventing; stallions Terskol, Stayer, mare Pulsatsia successfully performed in Czechoslovakia at international steeplechase competitions.

In 2003 there were 710 Terek horses in all of Russia, and in 2007 only 250 purebred mares.
