Vyatka horse is an aboriginal breed of horses of the northern forest type, formed by the end of the 17th - beginning of the 18th centuries on the territory of modern Kirov region and Udmurtia. This is one of the ten primitive horse breeds in Russia. In the first half of the 19th century, the Vyatka troikas were famous throughout Russia.

The rich flooded meadows along the Vyatka and Obvinka rivers with their tributaries provided a good and stable forage base, thanks to which the local horses stood out among other forest horses. Certain influence on the formation of the Vyatka horse was undoubtedly exerted by those western forest horses, in particular the Baltic clippers, which came here with the Novgorod settlers or were brought in specially during the reign of Tsars Alexei Mikhailovich and Peter I.

At the end of the 19th century, the Vyatka horse was sold at the Simbirsk, Samara and Penza fairs. The Vyatka horse was presented at the national horse show in Moscow in 1866, at the World Horse Show in Paris in 1867 and at the Horse Show in Rotterdam in 1880. In 1917, the Vyatka horse practically disappeared; however, some attempts to restore the breed were made after the Great October Revolution.

The color is predominantly Savrasa. A distinctive feature of the color of the Vyatka horses is the obligatory presence of a dark stripe along the back - a "belt". "Belt" is an atavism inherited by this breed from wild aboriginal horses, along with "zebroid" (transverse stripes on the limbs) and dark "patches" on the shoulders and shoulder blades. Good coat, thick mane and tail.

Vyatka horses are hardy, energetic, good-natured, fertile. They have a not particularly wide, but productive trot.

As a result, not always justified, crossing with heavy drafts and trotters, as well as due to the general reduction in the number of horses, purebred horses have become extremely rare. In 1980, a census of livestock in Udmurtia and the Kirov region showed that the total number of horses classified as Vyatka was approximately 2,000.
