How to care for a Manx's coat?

The Manx has a short double coat (guard hair and undercoat). For weekly grooming of their fur you will need:

- a metal massage brush with an antistatic coating, - a double-sided comb, - a furminator or slicker.

Despite the fact that the Manx has short hair, they have a thick undercoat, which can sometimes fall into small mats. The mats are quite easy to disassemble by hand or a fine comb.

Brushing cats has two goals: to tidy up the cat's coat (smooth, smooth, remove tangles) and comb out dead hair. It is recommended to comb the manks with the following pattern: head, neck, sides, back, chest, abdomen and limbs. This is an approximate sequence, which, of course, does not have to be strictly followed. First, brushing should be done with a double-sided comb, then in the same sequence it is recommended to comb out the dead hairs of the undercoat using a slicker of a suitable size or furminator.

Furminator, although more expensive than a slicker, is much more effective in removing dead hair from the undercoat. The third run should be done with a massage brush. The brush can be used with hard natural bristles or better with metal teeth with an anti-static coating. If no such coating is available, or a natural bristle brush is selected, a spray bottle with boiled water can be used to reduce the generation of static electricity. After brushing or combing over the Manx's coat, it is advisable to walk with wet hands and collect the remaining combed hairs.

During the seasonal shedding period, it is recommended to increase the number of grooming procedures up to two per week; in the normal season, once every 7-10 days is sufficient.

To participate in exhibitions, the Manx wool requires special care and pre-exhibition preparation. You can read more about this in the relevant literature, ask the breeder, or better (if there is no experience) contact an experienced feline stylist.

How to bathe a Manx, and how often?

Bathing a Manx is a nervous process, but necessary. It is best to bathe the cat together (one washes, the other holds). You can bathe kittens in a basin or sink, but an adult cat will need a large container, such as a bath. The bottom of the bathtub has a smooth finish, which can make the feet slip, so you can place a towel or rubber bath mat on the bottom. Some breeders put cotton wool in the ears of cats, but it is still better not to do this, since sound isolation can only increase the pet's nervous tension. Just try to gently wash your cat so that water does not run into the ears and the shampoo does not get into the eyes or mouth. Before starting the procedure, you must prepare all the accessories (shampoo, conditioner or balm for wool, towel) and place them so that they do not interfere, but are at hand.

It is very important that the products used are intended specifically for cats. Cats have a different Ph level of the skin than humans and dogs, so special shampoos are made for them.

So, everything is ready, the manks is in the tub, the warm water is on. The coat is well moistened, due to the thick undercoat it will take some time. When the coat gets wet, you can apply shampoo. After thoroughly rinsing the Manx's coat, it is recommended to apply a balm for cat hair, and wait for the time indicated by the manufacturer, then rinse it off. If shampoo or balm remains on the cat's coat, then, when dry, they will help it stick together. If the balm is not used, then after the shampoo has been washed off, you can use indelible hair care products. At the end, the manks should be wiped well with a towel and made sure that it remains warm until completely dry. If possible, you should refuse a hair dryer. After the wool has dried, it is advisable to comb it with a massage brush.

Bathing menks is fully recommended only when necessary. In all other cases, you can use sanitary napkins for cats or dry shampoo. For prevention, you can bathe your pet twice a year during the seasonal molt (and cleanliness, and at the same time remove the dead hair).

It is recommended to cut Manx's claws about once a month, but it is better to focus on their growth (as soon as they become long, then cut them). Outdoor cats usually do not have their nails cut.

How to care for Manx's teeth?

Manx, like cats of other breeds, are encouraged to brush their teeth every day, but this is rarely done. Therefore, breeders recommend that Manx owners clean them at least once a week. Special animal toothpastes have been developed for cleaning, as human toothpastes and powders cause stomach upset in cats. Animal pastes do not need to be rinsed off and do not foam. You can buy a toothbrush at a pet store, use a baby toothbrush, or wrap a piece of gauze or bandage around your index finger. It is recommended to brush your teeth with sweeping movements, preferably from all sides.

In addition to toothpaste for animals, you can use sanitary napkins for cats and dogs, special chewable tablets that help clean the teeth, and sprays with the same effect. For prevention, solid food (but not bones!) Is well suited.

How to care for manks eyes?

Cats have discharge in the corners of their eyes after sleeping. They usually form in small amounts and should be removed with a piece of cloth or gauze soaked in cool boiled water. Cotton, calico or viscose are well suited. It should be removed from the outer edge of the eye to the inner. A separate piece of tissue is used for each eye.

If the mucous membrane of the cat's eyes turns red, it is necessary to take measures: rinse the eyes with special drops or lotion (not plain water!) And / or apply eye ointment to the lower eyelid (unpleasant for cats, even painful). You can use eye ointment for people, but drops for human eyes are contraindicated for cats, as they dry out the mucous membranes of the eyes. If home measures did not help within a couple of days, the search for the cause of redness and lacrimation was not successful, then it is imperative to show Manks to the veterinarian.

How to care for Manks ears?

The ears should be checked regularly - once a week. If a manx goes out for a walk, it is recommended to carry out examinations more often (2-4 times a week) in order to notice parasites, inflammation or injuries in time and take appropriate measures. It is recommended to clean your ears with a special product and a soft cloth. Cotton swabs are not recommended as they can damage the ear. Ear cleaners for cats and dogs are inexpensive and highly recommended. But if, nevertheless, this is not possible, you can moisten the cotton wool in vegetable / vaseline oil or in a solution of apple cider vinegar and water (in a 50/50 ratio). Manx's ears must be cleaned very carefully and carefully. Special drops are produced for deep cleaning. Penetration into the ear canal is very dangerous and should not be done.

How to care for Manx's claws?

The nails are usually clipped about twice a month. A good quality nail clipper should be used to trim the nails, or guillotine clippers can be used. It is recommended to place a styptic (styptic powder, cornstarch, edible gelatin) nearby before cutting, just in case the haircut is not completely unsuccessful, so to speak. When everything is ready, you need to seat the manx so that he cannot escape, or take a moment when the cat is relaxed and indifferent to the actions of the owner. The paw must be held securely so that unexpected twitching does not lead to injury. Press down on your finger so that the entire claw appears. Then it will be possible to see the pink area near the base of the claw, which cannot be touched with a claw cutter, there are vessels and nerves. The tip should be trimmed before the claw rounds, so the likelihood of injury will be minimized. You should also try to trim the claw straight, keeping the claw cutter parallel to the claw, otherwise the claw will become shorter but remain sharp. If the manx resists, then you can cut it gradually in 1-2 days, but it should not be delayed so as not to complicate the life of cats (claws of different lengths are, at least, uncomfortable).
