Bohemian Rex history

Bohemian Rexes began to appear in large numbers in Persian litters in the 1980s in Czechoslovakia, which surprised breeders a lot. The parents of these kittens were two blue Persian cats, imported from Germany in the 1970s. Through research, a partial genetic match was established between the Persian Rex and curly breeds such as Cornish Rex and German Rex. According to one of the versions, the Persians received the gene for "curliness" in the 1950s-60s when breeding German Rexes.

Controlled breeding of the Bohemian Rex started in 1989, and five years later the FIFE organization approved the registration of the preliminary breed standard. At the same time, other breeders' organizations did not recognize the Czech Rex as an independent breed.

The appearance of the Czech Rex

The appearance of the Bohemian Rex is the same as that of the Persian cats except for the long, thick curly coat. The head is medium to large in size, with a massive and round skull. The forehead is rounded. Wide cheeks, wide nose with a short stop at eye level. Wide, well developed jaws with a strong chin. The cheeks are plump, thick, slightly sagging. The ears are small, with rounded tips, set wide apart. The neck is short and strong. The body is massive, stocky. The chest is slightly convex, wide. The limbs are short, stocky, powerful. The croup and shoulders are massive, heavy, almost equal in width. Feet are large, rounded, with strong toes and tufts of lush hair between them.

Large round eyes are located far from each other, slightly convex, similar in color to the color of the coat. The tail is short, covered with thick hair and rounded at the end.

The Bohemian Rex's coat is slightly shorter than that of Persian cats. It is pleasant to the touch, with a well-developed undercoat. The wool on the neck forms a lush "collar", and on the hips - "pants". On the sides, back and abdomen, the spiral curls are more visible. The coat curls strongly, with the exception of the hairs on the face and ears. The hairs, curling up, resemble the shape of the Latin letters J, U or S. The main coat colors are the same as those of the common Rex: white, cameo, blue, bicolor, red, tortoiseshell, cream, smoky, etc.

The character and temperament of the Bohemian Rex

Bohemian Rexes are amazing creatures. They have a kind, sympathetic, gentle and inquisitive character. They are truly friendly, love affection and obedient, somewhat phlegmatic, and one might say a little shy. They love the society of a person and most of all value the emotional connection with the owner. Cats of this breed feel great in both large and small apartments. The favorite pastime of these pussies is to climb somewhere higher, lie down more comfortably and watch what is happening in the house.

They love to spend time with their owner. They just love to sit on their knees and cuddle up to the owner. As a rule, they follow him from room to room, and at night they sleep in the same bed. They do not tolerate separation from loved ones, do not like changes in life and moving. It is important for them that someone is in the house all the time.

Although Czech Rexes give the impression of lazy and slow cats, they are not averse to playing and amusing their beloved owner with various tricks. Nevertheless, these cats are not fond of traveling, and even more so walking along the noisy city streets. Most people prefer a calm, quiet and safe place on an armchair or couch, especially on cold autumn and winter days. They are rarely aggressive, especially towards children who can hurt them. In this case, the rex will simply go to a place inaccessible to the child without giving change.

They are capricious, but as soon as they begin to pay attention or play with them, their mood immediately improves. Bohemian Rexes have excellent memory and high levels of empathy. They are not noisy cat breeds, so they are great for people looking for a calm pet. Czech Rex are ideal for single or elderly people, as well as families with children.

The voice of Czech Rex is quite loud, but not annoying. These cats get along well with dogs and other cats.

Care and feeding of Czech rex

In addition to the original appearance, the wool of the Bohemian Rex provides cats with good protection from cold and moisture. Caring for ears, eyes, claws and teeth is the same as for other cats. The discharge from the eyes is removed daily, the ears are checked once a week (they are cleaned only as they become dirty) and the teeth are brushed (using a toothbrush and paste for cats), the nails are trimmed twice a month. The coat of Czech Rex is carefully combed with a metal comb with sparse teeth once a week so as not to damage the curls. The small and graceful ears of Rex are often overgrown with hair, so it has to be cut off. To do this, use small scissors with round tips.

From feeds, preference is given to super and super premium class with a high content of meat, rather than offal.

Health

The Czech Rex is a healthy, strong and hardy cat breed with an average lifespan of 12-15 years. The duration of pregnancy usually lasts about 63 days. The average number of kittens in a litter is 3-6. Rex practically do not get sick, but with the onset of cold weather they need a diet with a high fat content. For coat health, it is recommended to additionally give these cats B vitamins.
