Kohona, or Hawaiian hairless (Nudedudes sphynx, Kohana cat) is the only truly hairless cat breed in the world. It's hard to say when these cats first appeared, but the first official mention of them dates back to the 1980s. Their homeland is Hawaii.
The first person to notice and decide to breed Cohon cats was the veterinarian Victoria Smith. She turned to an experienced hairless breeder and owner of a large CFA registered cattery Kim Everett for help. Since 2000, they began to work together to breed these cats.
Structure and appearance
Cohons are unique pets. Outwardly, they look like sphinxes, differing from them mainly in the shape of the head and the type of folding, but their main difference is not visible to the eye. Unlike sphinxes and other hairless cats, Hawaiian hairless cats do not have hair follicles, so hair growth (including eyebrows and vibrissae) is basically impossible. This trait is the result of a natural gene mutation.
The skin of these cats is absolutely smooth, thick, elastic, covered with numerous folds. It feels like warm wax to the touch. The greatest accumulation of folds is observed on the forehead and cheeks. The ears are medium in size, broad at the base, with rounded tips. The eyes are medium, almond-shaped. The cohon's tail is usually curled into a tight ring and pressed to the side. The body has developed muscles. Extremities without thickening.
Hawaiian hairless cats are medium sized strong cats. The weight of cats ranges from 2.7 to 3.6 kg, of cats - from 3.6 to 5 kg (castrated animals often weigh more). Height from 17 to 23 cm.
Cohona's character and behavior
Due to the small number, the determination of character traits is difficult. Today, all Cohon breeders agree that Hawaiians are more loyal to the owner than other cat breeds, almost like dogs. Kohons require a lot of attention. If they lack it, they will definitely ask for it, at first unobtrusively, but if this does not work, they will be more decisive and demanding. Here another feature of theirs comes to light - persistence. They will insist on sleeping with you in the same bed or on your lap, wherever you are.
Without attention, representatives of this breed may begin to be sad or mischievous. The same applies to loneliness. A Sphinx that is left alone for hours on end will be very depressed and unhappy. Prolonged loneliness can cause serious mental wounds to the cohons and undermine the authority of the owner. Kohons are not very curious. They do not search every corner of the house, they are interested in shopping and new people, as if doing a favor or passing by. Also Hawaiian hairless are calm, moderately playful, quite quiet. It has been observed that these cats perfectly feel the mood of people. These cats are happy to travel with their owners, easily getting used to the leash and transport. They love to swim and play with water.
Care and maintenance of the Hawaiian hairless cat
Like all hairless cats, Hawaiians require special maintenance and specific care. Cats of this breed can live in small apartments or houses, but drafts, temperature changes and the street are contraindicated for them, if "overboard" is less than + 25 ° С. Fresh water must be readily available, since the cochons drink quite a lot of water due to their metabolism.
Hawaiian hairless cats need to be cared for daily. Due to the lack of eyelashes, the Kohon's eyes become more dirty, so their cleanliness must be monitored every day, removing dirt and secretions with a damp piece of cotton wool or a napkin. Due to the accelerated metabolism in the large ears of the cochon, a sulfur deposit quickly appears. It should be removed at least once a week with a piece of cotton wool or a cotton swab dipped in vaseline oil, a special tool or plain water. It is recommended to trim the claws of "Hawaiians", like other cats, once a month with a claw cutter. The skin of Hawaiian hairless cats requires regular grooming. It is recommended to wipe it daily with a damp sponge, paying particular attention to the folds and tail. It is necessary to bathe the cojon 2-3 times a month using a shampoo intended for sphinxes. After the bath, the animal must be dried with a towel. For walks in the fresh air, it is recommended to use special clothing and boots. Despite the complete absence of hair, cochons are not hypoallergenic, as they have dandruff, which also causes allergies.
Cochons, like other hairless animals, are susceptible to sunburn and the lighter the cat, the more serious the problem. Bimeda's PetScreen SPF23 can be used to protect against the sun's rays; this product is absolutely safe. Never use sunscreen designed for humans - they are poisonous to cats!
Health. At the present time, it has not been possible to identify diseases characteristic of this particular breed. It is only known that profuse folds, both for mothers and kittens, cause complications during childbirth. The average life expectancy is 13-17 years.
Kittens cost
According to 2012 data, there are only three cattery registered in the world for breeding and selling Hawaiian hairless cats, they are located in Hawaii, the USA and Great Britain (one cattery in each country). The cost of kittens due to their small number is strictly individual, but not less than US $ 2,000.
