Synthetic materials are a product of modern times, and the aquarium industry has mastered them several decades ago: in the same way they are used by aquarists in their "laboratories". Without one of these materials, modern aquarism would be unthinkable: silicone rubber.
When using synthetic materials, special care must be taken that one or another of them cannot release toxic substances when it is immersed in water. Two-part glue is not at all an all-healing remedy, and precisely because it consists of two main materials. Silicone rubber contains only one component and can be used without any hesitation as it comes out of a tube or cylinder.
Heat is not necessary for all synthetic materials to cure. For example, we know acrylic glue, with which organic glass is glued: it hardens only under the influence of light. The many times mentioned silicone rubber also does not require heat; it cures under the influence of air humidity.
Many aquarists use polyurethane foam for foaming. I must say that the specialized trade offers many varieties of foam sealants and insulators. Most of the time, however, hobbyists do not use these materials for sealing or insulation. Foam is sold, in particular, in pressure packages; applied and hardened, it takes on a creamy yellow or white color. The convenience of hardened polyurethane foam is that it can be cut, trimmed, and holes drilled in it. It bonds with synthetic materials and stones even when wet. Therefore, it makes sense to solve the controversial issue of the back wall of the aquarium with the help of this polymer material.
