What is aquarism? This is the provision of the necessary living conditions in captivity for fish and other aquatic organisms in special vessels. This does not include keeping fish in backyard ponds. Compared to domestic conditions, specific difficulties arise there. As for aquarium lovers - aquarists - we will consider them those who devote all their free time to caring for underwater pets.

This is a peculiar and rather troublesome business, but today you do not need to delve deeply into it. In Moscow and in other large cities of Russia, specialists have already appeared who are ready to provide permanently or temporarily paid services for the care of aquariums - whether at your home, at work or in places of recreation. You can get help from these professional aquarists through pet shops and pet stores.
Presumably, in all ages (yes, it was centuries, if we take into account the two or three thousand years of experience of Chinese aquarists in breeding goldfish breeds), the first difficulty consisted in creating large enough containers, vessels for keeping aquatic organisms in captivity. The task became easier when people learned to cast smooth, transparent glass. But water, as you know, is a heavy substance. And to safely hold water behind 50cm x 50cm aquarium walls, you need to use 6mm glass. For aquariums of large volumes, especially for high ones, already very thick display cases and even "door" glasses, and sometimes triplex, are needed. However, the real revolution in the construction of aquariums occurred when silicone rubber was used for gluing the glass ends. Gone are the extremely short-lived cement-lacquer putties, bulky and awkward frames. Silicone rubber (silicone glue) used by aquarists, when cured, resembles dense rubber. It is harmless to fish, surprisingly durable, elastic, firmly adheres to glass. Aquariums glued with silicone rubber can be stored dry for as long as you want, they can be moved, moved without draining the water (of course, if the glass does not burst due to distortion, of course).
However, this revolution has led not only to an almost limitless increase in the size and reliability of aquariums. The widespread use of large-volume aquariums led to the creation of powerful service units and their serial production. Even some 40 years ago, the limit of aquarium automation was electric, air compressors and heaters based on a contact thermometer. Who now remembers what it is? After all, a modern marine aquarium is equipped with a powerful multifunctional filter and an automatic device for controlling biological water purification, for stabilizing biological processes and maintaining optimal living conditions for its inhabitants. And the set of a branded freshwater aquarium includes a pedestal stand, an illuminator cover, a built-in biological filter, pumping 2-4 aquarium volumes per hour using an electric pump with associated air atomization, as well as an automatic heater. Some companies also complete their aquariums with built-in timers, lighting control and automatic feeders for dry food. Of course, the cost of such aquariums is relatively high.

If you buy a ready-made glued "jar" or order somewhere special, according to your taste, then you can buy attachments for it in full, as they say, the program. Difficulties for "home-made" were at all times, and today there is only one - the illuminator. In the corporate version, this aquarium detail is rare, and if you are lucky, then it is better to make (order) an aquarium for it, for its size, and not vice versa.
The purchased aquarium must be decorated. Today, any pet store is full of all kinds of ceramic and plastic grottoes, locks and snags. You can easily choose the right artificial plants to your taste. With them, you will have only one concern for a long time - sometimes take them out of the aquarium and rinse them under the tap. Recently, plants made on a woven basis have appeared on the market. They imitate wildlife surprisingly accurately.

In the past, a great deal of ingenuity was required to design the back of an aquarium. If you leave it free, then you will have to contemplate your fish against the background of the wallpaper on the wall, which, you see, is not always aesthetically pleasing. This problem, of course, does not arise if the aquarium is installed "in the light", that is, away from the wall. Today there are several possible solutions to this issue. The simplest and most often used is to stick on the back wall from the outside (rarely from the inside) a plastic film depicting underwater plants, stones, snags, corals, the ruins of ancient buildings, and so on. There are a lot of options, you can always choose something to your liking. This backdrop is durable, won't fade or deteriorate from moisture. A more complex and expensive design is embossed plates glued to the back wall from the inside. They perfectly imitate rocks, driftwood, but have one significant drawback: parts of the plastic underwater interior are quite difficult to clean from the inevitably growing algae.

Modern Aquarium Volumes

Once I had a thirty- liter aquarium, and without any technical devices, apart from the illumination of the most ordinary incandescent light bulb … The quality of the water was maintained by weekly changes of 6-7 liters with fresh one. The small population - macropods and three catfish-corridors - simply ignored fluctuations in hydrochemical indicators, and they cared very little about the oxygen content in the water (macropods, it seems, did not care at all)
