Echinodorus rough, or large-leaved Echinodorus is distributed from Venezuela to Brazil. The plant reaches a height of up to 30 cm, occupies an area of approximately the same diameter.

It has a powerful fibrous root system and white cord-like roots. Leaves are of two types. Above water - dense, dark green, ovate, sometimes wide, cordate, on long petioles, rough to the touch. Underwater - large, from light to dark green, oval or with a shallow heart-shaped incision, up to 15 cm long and up to 10 cm wide. Petiole - from 1/2 to twice the length of the leaf. On the leaves, 5 veins converging to an oval-pointed apex are clearly visible.

The following indicators are considered optimal for the content of echinodorus: slightly alkaline or neutral water, its temperature should be in the range of 20-28 ° C, dH 10-15, pH 6.0-7.5. Requires a weekly change of 25% of the aquarium water. The degree of illumination can be either medium or intense, approximately 0.5 W per liter of water.

Daylight hours are 10-11 hours. This plant can be grown in relatively poor soil. Under normal conditions, it grows rapidly and usually transforms into a terrestrial form.

Rough Echinodorus reproduces mainly by seeds. Reproduction by dormant buds on the rhizome and vegetative is possible. In an aquarium, the plant is planted in the middle ground.

When cultivating this plant, it must be remembered that it easily crosses with closely related species. If this could not be avoided, it is necessary to select among the seedlings that have reached 3-5 cm in height. Rough echinodorus is suitable for keeping in an aquarium and greenhouse.
