Fish-soldiers and fish-squirrels (family Holocenter) - inhabitants of coral reefs, during the day hide in secluded corners and crevices of reefs. They live in tropical areas of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. They inhabit a variety of coral reefs, mainly in shallow areas. They are found on average at depths of up to 100 meters, rarely up to 200 meters. Predators are nocturnal. During the day they hide in crevices or reef cavities. These fish have large eyes and strong dorsal fins.
Soldier fish feed on zooplankton, while squirrel fish feed on benthic invertebrates (primarily crustaceans) and small fish. The predominant color is shades of reddish citrus, sometimes with black, white and yellow spots. Some species are solitary, while most species live in groups.

Red Squirrel Fish (Sargocentron rubrum)
Dimensions are about 20-30 cm, however, the length of some species reaches 60 cm. The body is compressed from the sides. The teeth are small and narrow. The caudal fin is bifurcated; the anal fin is triangular. There are two dorsal fins, the anterior fins are wider, extended along the back, the posterior fins are high, triangular. The swim bladder is large.
Spawning occurs at night or at dusk in open water. Caviar with a diameter of 2 to 3 mm, floating on the surface. The larvae are pelagic, elongated, silvery, and can be found far out in the sea.
Keeping in the aquarium
To keep soldier fish in an aquarium, you will need an aquarium of 250 liters or more, in which there are many ledges and crevices where the fish will hide. Feed the squirrel fish at night when they are active. They cannot be kept together with small invertebrates, as the fish will eat them very quickly. The temperature of the content is 23.8-28.3 ° C. Since these fish live at depths where blue light cannot penetrate, UV lamps should not be installed in aquariums with holocentered fish.

Masked soldier fish (Myripristis murdjan)
These fish are relatively easy to care for. In the aquarium, soldiers are timid, and often hide if anyone approaches the aquarium. Feed your fish live shrimp, fish and meat products.
