The first herdbook in Westphalia was founded in 1888. The first tests for mares and stallions were carried out in 1905, later they were taken as a basis in other horse breeding regions in Germany. The base of the breed is located in Warendorf, the famous center of German horse breeding (there is also a national federation). During the Second World War, all the old bloodlines were destroyed.

It is known that at the beginning of the 19th century, stallions from East Prussia were provided to the owners of local mares to improve the breed. Over time, many crosses have been tried, including the Oldenburgs, Anglo-Normans, Hanover, Frisians and Trotters, but it was only in the last century that breeders opted exclusively for Hanover. Modern Westphalians have in common with today's Hanover tribal lines, although besides them there are a number of lines specially bred in Westphalia.
