The Canadian horse is a national treasure in Canada. This hardy breed comes from horses originally sent to the "New World" by King Louis XIV of France from 1647 to 1671. The Canadian horse was bred by crossing the fast-paced horses belonging to the French colonists with the Percherons and Clydesdals, and later with thoroughbred riding stallions. Includes easy-draft and weighted riding types.

Farmers rented horses and gave them foals as payment. Three years later, the farmer acquired the right to independently breed horses. By 1679, 145 foals were born through this program, and their number tripled over the next 17 years. By 1763, there were already 13,000 horses in New France. Since the breed developed in unfavorable climatic conditions, with a lack of food, the Canadian horse remains to this day the strongest and most acclimatized horse in Canada. These are tough, strong horses that endure bad weather well.

In the 18th century, the Canadian horse was common throughout Canada and the United States. The Canadian has been used for cross-breeding to improve the strength and endurance of other breeds. More and more Canadian horses were exported to the sugar plantations of Western India and the United States, where the horses fought in the civil war. They were used in all jobs, whether it was working on the farm or going to the village church on Sunday morning.

After World War II, the breed began to decline rapidly, and with the advent of mechanization on farms, the Canadian horse almost disappeared. During the 1960s and 70s, there were fewer than 400 horses. By the late 1970s, the danger of the breed's extinction was finally recognized and measures were taken by breeders to keep the Canadian horse from extinction.
