Camargue, or the Camargue (Camargue horse) - breed broncos light gray color, Aboriginal eponymous swampy area (area of 650 square kilometers) on the Mediterranean coast of France in the delta of the Rhone River. The immediate ancestor of the breed is considered the prehistoric horse solutre, which lived in Western Europe in the Paleolithic (about 50 thousand years ago).

This horse is very similar to the images in the caves taken about 17,000 years ago. Horse skeletons, discovered in the south of France in the 19th century, may presumably belong to the distant ancestors of this breed. The breed was influenced by the blood of the Barbary horse back in the days of the Muslim campaigns. Some sources claim that the Camargue is of eastern origin (from the Arab horses left behind by the Saracens during the invasion of southern France in the 8th century). Most likely, the stallions were left by the Saracens, who were later crossed with local mares. However, to this day, due to geographical isolation, the appearance of the horse has remained practically unchanged.

The Camargue has always played an important role in the life of the inhabitants of those regions, as it served the shepherds as a strong horse with a confident step to work with herds of fighting bulls, which were traditionally bred here. Despite its relatively small stature, the Camargue does not take up strength and courage.

In 1968, the Association of Horse Breeders recognized the Camargue as a separate horse breed, a herd book was opened and a strict record of all animals began to be kept. In the habitat of the Camargue, a reserve was organized. Camargue live in free herds in the wastelands, only once a year they are herded for inspection, during which sick and old animals are discarded, stallions deviating from the desired exterior are castrated, and the young are branded.

Foals are born from April to July and live with the mares at large. The color of foals is black or red, with a white mark on the forehead. By the time they are six months old, they stop drinking milk and follow their mother everywhere. By 5-7 months, the color of the foals changes to white or pale gray.

At the age of one year, foals are stamped on the left thigh. Each breeder has his own brand.
