The Novokirghiz horse was bred in Kyrgyzstan, in the Tien Shan mountains by crossing a Kyrgyz horse with a Don and a thoroughbred horse in conditions of herd keeping on alpine pastures. It was approved as an independent breed in 1954. In speed and endurance it surpasses many horse breeds.

To raise horses of a new breed, they used the method of cultural herd keeping. When forming herds, the individual qualities of each individual, its working productivity and adaptability to local habitat conditions were taken into account. Then the hybrids of the first and second generations of the desired type were mated with each other, which made it possible to consolidate the beneficial qualities of the original breeds in the offspring.
The foals were weaned at the age of 6-8 months. Weaning foals in winter were regularly fed with hay and concentrates. The best youngsters, at the age of one and a half years, entered training and were tested at hippodromes in smooth races and national equestrian games.
