What to feed a Norwegian Forest Cat?
When feeding Norwegian Forest cats, among the classic types of feeding (only prepared foods; only natural; both; raw food) preference is given to the mixed type, as the most suitable. It must be remembered that cats of this breed eat quite a lot due to their impressive size. And since "Norwegians" are prone to obesity, the choice of feed and its amount must be approached with great responsibility.
Food with a high content of animal proteins (40-80%) and a minimum of carbohydrates (up to 10%) is considered ideal for cats.
The basis, as a rule, is most often taken from dry industrial food, but it happens that canned food of a super premium class is also taken. They give it in the morning. The amount of feed in one portion can be calculated independently, being guided by the instructions published on the package. In the evening and at lunchtime (with three meals a day), they give natural products.
For Norwegian forest cats, it is recommended to cook special "cat" porridge, which includes lean meat (beef, veal, rabbit, chicken, lamb, turkey), offal (liver, heart, lungs, kidneys), coarse grains (it is not recommended to give cereals with high in gluten: wheat, rye, barley, barley and oats), a little vegetable oil and vegetables (carrots, potatoes, pumpkin, broccoli). Porridge should be cooked without adding spices, salt and sugar, only in water. Fresh porridge is cooked every day (all components of porridge can be given separately). Once a week, meat can be replaced with good quality boneless sea fish (salmon, cod, haddock, tuna) or unsweetened cottage cheese.
You can add boiled egg yolk (no more than 2 yolks per week), unsweetened dairy products to the diet. Cooked food and products for humans (various sausages, pastries, and the like) are harmful to Norwegians and should therefore not be given to cats.
Do not give cats freshwater fish and pork (in any form), raw egg white, legumes, alcohol, raisins, nuts, chocolate, onions, garlic, green tomatoes. Special treats for cats can be given once a day. It is not recommended to give cow's milk to adult cats as it can cause diarrhea (diarrhea). If your Norwegian Forest Cat is very fond of milk, you can buy a cat milk substitute at the pet store.
If ready-made feed is selected as feed, then dry feed and canned food can be combined. For example, dry food is given in the morning, and wet food (canned food) in the evening. It is usually recommended to feed cats from the same manufacturer or line.
When choosing a raw food diet, you should first consult a veterinarian after examining a cat (suddenly there are diseases in which this type of feeding is not recommended), and then carefully monitor the animal's well-being. The fact is that, despite active advertising about the benefits of such feeding, a raw food diet is not suitable for some cats (they begin to have problems with the stomach and gastrointestinal tract).
Your cat should always have access to clean, fresh water.
